Hello folks,

I finally got in touch with Peter and we are working with him on our new banner.

If you're not too busy, can you give me some feedback?

I put the banner up on my test site.

Thanks for your help!

i'm not sure i'd re-use that image.  IIRC thats the image that comes with a free WP theme?  I'd look for something a bit more unique – something that means something to you.

Peter suggested to us not making our banner so "wide" (top to bottom) – I think you could do this as well.

I like the text font, but ultimately, your background image will need to dictate the colours you use in the title font.

I took that picture in Thailand. I'll look around in my archive and see if I can find anything better.

Is there any reason to have the banner shorter? I'll try shrinking it a bit.

I like the 3rd the most. But the orange sort of blends in with the background, can you change the background? (I understand you want the orange)

I like the third one the best – and I agree with maybe using a different background. I thought it was a standard WP image too. Maybe something a little more bright and eye-catching. :)

I like #3 best too. Maybe try a variation with black font for all except the 40?

@RB40

If that is your own photo cool – I thought it was stock.

For the height of the banner, I was looking @ the one at the top of your site, currently.  I was advised that the more space the banner takes up the less content the reader sees. Just passing on what I was told.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I ask Pete to highlight "40" to make it stand out a bit.

I'll also search for a better sunset picture. I don't think I have any better pictures personally though.

This is a great excuse to take a beach vacation so I'll be able to deduct tax. Wink

I'm hesitating to use common creative flickr photo for the banner.

Hey RB40,

I like number 3, too.  Funny I saw a comment on your test site and I am beginning to see the same thing.  Because the words are so close, Retire by kind of looks like Retireby, one word.  Your Thailand shot is great, but it does kind of look like an image I saw from a free theme.  Kudos for improving your logo though!

I like the third but I would recommend a different picture as well.

Hopping on the new background bandwagon.  I always thought you were using the default picture for your site.  Maybe just go with a white background and see if Pete can add a tagline beneath your logo.  Maybe consider something like "An engineer's journey to retire by 40" or something.  It lets your visitors know immediately what they can expect to find on your site, and helps draw them in.

If you use this tool: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/? and check the three tick boxes at the bottom, then you can find some free-to-use photography from Flikr members.

Hey RB40,

Are you using the Twenty Ten theme?  I think no matter what picture you put in your banner, it's going to look like a default picture because the theme is the default or close to the default WordPress theme.

I hate to just repeat what everyone else said, but I do like #3 the best. "Beefing" up the '40' a little more would be great, along with having your tagline at the bottom (using a dark text).

Yes, I'm using 2010. I just checked and I see your point. I think any sunset picture is going to have similar coloring. I'll keep it for now and will keep a look out for a better picture. Hopefully, I can take a nice picture myself at some point.

I'll see if I can find a different theme as well.
