Hi all,
Glad you all had a great time and learned a lot. Love reading your recaps since I couldn't make it. Just curious, how many of you view your blog as a hobby and how many see it as a business?
In a podcast interview with Stephanie Pollack, she mentions that if it is a business, you need to act like a CEO to make it successful. I'm still figuring myself out, but my take is if you think of it as a hobby, you shouldn't get upset if you get "hobby" type results. If you want bigger and better results, then you need to convert it to a biz or you'll always be disappointed.

It is definitely a hobby for me, and because I do realize that it is a hobby (and I want to keep it this way,) I don't get upset with up and downs of traffic, income and number of comments. People read me – great. No one reads me, fine. I still will write because I love writing. I don't have time or energy to turn it into a business.

Edward Antrobus is a hobby. I'll make efforts to try to make it more successful and profitable, but at the end of the day, it's a hobby.
If You Can Read, You Can Cook is a business. I'm definitely trying to make money with it.

It's a hobby because I don't have time to devote to a small business right now.
I can only write when baby is in bed so that's a big constraint.
I'm planning to concentrate on improving my writing over this next year (until next FinCon.)
After that, I'll look more into hiring some helps if things pick up. A regular baby sitter would really help.

Mine started out as a hobby, sort of became a business, and has now become more of a hobby again. I'm in a transition stage right now, trying to feel out what I want to get out of it and how best to achieve that. One of the things I love about blogging is that there is always room to grow and move in a different direction, even if it's not the direction originally planned upon!

My blog is a business since it provides most of my income. I treat it more like a hobby though, I mostly just work on it when I feel like it.

I am tempted to say that it is a business – but I find it so pleasurable. It is a business because I am very disciplined with it. For instance, I have missed posting a schedule article only once in 18 months and it was in summer 2011 because I was in hospital just having had surgery. Having said that, I am very disciplined with my running as well and it is certainly a hobby.
I do grow it organically and carefully; and it is just starting to make money that is worth getting a bit excited about.
So, it is a business, I suppose – one that is loads of fun.
Maria

I didn't attend fincon, but that is one of the best questions Ive seen up in the forums in awhile! Mainly because we are asking people that went to Fincon (and presumably shelled out the dollars for it) if they are blogging for hobby or business…that definitely says a lot.
Im still gonna answer this question even though I didnt go, because Ive been asking myself this question for quite some time now… I would say Im still a hybrid of both business/hobby. Ive let my main blog down unfortunately, and still want to pick it back up as I have more time. On the other hand I still do a lot of things blogging related. I like writing a lot, but at the same time I might not have the same level of passion that some of you do for it, but I also like being challenged in general! I guess growing my blogging business might bring in income, but a lot of it is centered around goals Ive set myself and seeing how big I can grow it…not just for money, but for the satisfaction that I can actually do this.

I'm running it like a business, but also am trying to make it pay its own way (bootstrap it). It so far is not producing enough $$ to hire staff or get for pay products…..but I'm hoping.
I'm working on several sites at the same time so that sucks a lot of my resources.

I need to take a lesson from your book Alyosa. Some days I still get affected by number of readers and comments. Bad Buck!

With Baby Buck in tow, it is quite challenging. I can't find your post about being a Daddy blogger, so I'll post it here. Check it out.

Blogging does have many directions, that's why it's so addicting, yet confusing at times. Interesting you are in transition, I thought you would be even more full time than before with the writing and the media company.

Thanks Justin. I've been going back and forth myself. I assumed all FinCon folks would say business because going to these conferences can get pricey. Still figuring myself out if this is a side biz or an expensive hobby. I do love the growth and challenges as well. Good Luck!
