I'd like for you guys to read this post with four examples of why it's doable, very incredible difficult to do it to a point of generating a great operating income before taxes.
http://untemplater.com/busines…..-an-idiot/
I'm not sure if it's tough love, or just reality. Once you realize how difficult it is, your victory will be all the sweeter. Let's get some discussion going over there!
Best,
Sam

Great article Sam! I've always been skeptical of some of these guys and what they teach. Self employment is not for everybody. You really should be making substantial money from your side gig and have a plan to grow that before you quit a job and go solo. You should only quit your job because your side gig is kicking so much butt you can't do both.
There is a great book out there called "Quitter" by Jon Acuff that really examines how and why you should develop your dream without shooting yourself in the foot and ending up hating your dream. When you read his story you'll find that he has the authority and experiences to back it up too.

Good post Sam. You're on a roll.
I don't agree with you and left a comment. I'll have to go read all the comments when I have a little time.
The full time job is kicking my ass this week.

Great post Sam, enjoyed it quite a bit, and yes I think that it's much more about how much you decide to live on than how much you're making and that illustrated it quite well.. :) Thanks for sharing!

The only thing I would have liked is that you would have also added 4 more exmamples:
Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income who's not working like an idiot and make way more than he would ever had as an architect
JD Roth who sold his blog GRS (you can bet he sold over 1M$…. so even at 100K/year job, it takes 10 years to make it that far)
Crystal who's making a killing online (probably 6 times more than her previous day job)
John Chow who's making a killing too (for the past 10 years!)
You can also take 4 examples of people who lost their high paying jobs and never find another one and went bankdrupt. Or you can take the 4 other guys who crushed it in the corporate world… it's all a matter of taking an angle. But I don't think your article said it all ;-)
I'll be replying to your article on TFB next week ;-)

this is a nicely crafted, thought provoking post. however i do feel that it is heavily weighted on only one side of the coin. and like i said in my post, it's all about who you tune into on the blogosphere. I can't remember any of the blogs I read preaching to quit one's job.

Hey Sam…I read it. I agree with the concept. I am a big admirer of all of the bloggers out there working a full time job AND keeping a blog or two going. I'm retired and keeping up with my blog and staff writing keeps me engaged all day long.

Sam I thought your post was very well written. But in all honesty I felt your article was quite biased (not that I mind that) and didn't agree with it. I'm not sure I fully understood your angle or the message?
You seem angry at these people for succeeding, or you think they are smoke or mirrors, or that people shouldn't even try? Is there something wrong with selling a blog for $1 million? A few people are able to rise to the top, good on them. But I don't think most people would assume that applies to everyone, or seriously quit their jobs with an illusion of making a million.
Sorry I didn't get it…

I read the article as well – interesting argument and, as usual, very well set out and written. However, I believe that human being are fundamentally sensible and know what is best for them. Hence, I don't think many will up and leave their jobs just because they don't realise how hard it is to make a decent income from blogging or because of pure, misguided optimism. Or am I being wrong here?
At the same time, the intenet (and possible expansion of both quantity and kind of services and products that move through it) offers fairly unique opportunities. By all means, if you have a job paying big bucks with benefits don't leave it (I am not going to leave my job anytime soon) but what if people are made redundant (in the UK we haven't even peaked in this one) or they have been chasing every job going for three years and there is not even a whiff of one?
And yes, building and maintaining a blog is hard; it take time (loads of this), focus, persistence and savvy. Economically, it is often not really worth it (probably). Still, I am so proud of myself – in January I earned my first $$$ (not much; about $160) purely from writing. Otherwise, my fee per day is rather generous (over 10x that) and writing is involved but…not the same.
