Howdy Folks,
Since the beginning I've gone with full text for my RSS feed and e-mail. But I've been wondering maybe I should change to summary at risk of annoying my users.
I changed my RSS to summary for today's post on 401(k) average reaching record highs, and I saw a 15% lift in hourly traffic vs. normal.
So I'm wondering whether you have any strong viewpoints one way or another?
Thanks!
Sam

The email service I use has it my RSS email go out as a summary and it works out pretty well. I have thought about the same thing for my posts, but needed some convincing. You might have done it Sam!

Take my response with a grain of salt because I don't use RSS at all any more, but when I did, sites that only offered summaries didn't stay in my list for very long.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I have really strong opinions about this. You saw a spike in traffic, okay, but you have people subscribed to your feed. They're getting all your posts in their email — and you want to switch it so they have to do one more thing? It seems counter to what you're doing, which is providing value to your readers.

There's little question that you're probably going to get more clicks. But, I'd take a look at other numbers:
–How many comments are you getting?
–How many shares on social media are you getting?
If you see those numbers stay steady or decline, then you could actually be losing some of your readers who tend to be more engaged at the cost of a few extra clicks?
Personally, I've always preferred to subscribe to a larger number of blogs via RSS as the exposure gives me more opportunity to find and engage with content that matters to me. If everybody switched to summary mode, it would reduce the number of blog posts per day I could engage with. Therefore, I don't generally stay subscribed to blogs that provide summary articles.

Thanks for the thoughts. I like strong opinions, b/c I am not agitated by getting summary RSS feeds.
I think I'll experiment for 1 week and see what happens. After all, I've been experiment the other way for almost 5 years.
Regarding comments and social media stuff, it's more than normal at this stage with my latest post on average 401(k) balance. But, I think it's mostly because it is an interesting post with charts, opinion, and a survey. Come check it out for yourself! :)
