So I've got a little tip that I forgot about, but just found again in my bookmarks…it's been awhile since I've actually launched a site from scratch.
Anyway, here's the tool: http://profitinstruments.com/q…../index.php
How to use it:
Enter your domain
Click "Quickly Index This"
Four buttons will appear. Click the first one, which will open some 25-30 pages in a new tab. Let all of these load, then close them. Then click the second one "open url set 2" and let them load, then close all of them. Next, click Ping URL set and Pingurl set 2 which should be left to load then closed.
What it does
There are a ton of sites out there that track up-time, whois records, traffic and their own "valuation" of what your site is worth. (Don't take the valuation seriously!) These sites link to the domains on their data page. Thus, by using this tool you'll notify some 40 different trackers about your site, all of which will link to you. By clicking the pinging tool, all the newly made site.com/yourdomain pages will be pinged so google/bing/yahoo can find and index them. Once indexed by Google, you've 40 new backlinks to your homepage from sites with lots of authority…great for boosting your site a little, especially in the early stages.
There is no better way to add links so easily than this tool. I highly recommend using it!

Do you think those links have any quality?

Sure.
On a quick scan of the first button links, more than half have Domain authority rankings from SEOMoz of greater than 50. While that doesn't bring pagerank, nor does it quantify the quality of the individual page, it does help in building "trust" with search engines.
For maximum value, consider spending some time sending links to these Level 1 pages, too. Since they have a lot of trust, those with do follow pages send a LOT of linkweight when they start accumulating links of their own. I've used this technique to rank 1-3 (with authoritive sitelinks, no less) for keywords with competition ranging from 1-10 million competitors. In the same niche, I'm ranked second to third page for a single-word term with 67 million competition, and 6.2 million allintitle: competition–and I didn't even target this! It definitely works…
The niche has CPCs of $7 on adsense, and MarketSamurai says 1.7m searches.
Also, there's no such thing as a bad link TO your website, but you can definitely have bad links going OUT of your website.
Note: Not going to post the site here, but I will PM it if you don't believe me :P It is still in need of some heavy revision and beautifying…

JT, you seem to know a decent amount about SEO. Were you self taught or do you just have a lot of past experience with building websites and blogs?
I've read a lot about SEO but for the amount I've read I still seem uncertain in my actions about exactly what I should do. I find it a pain that you have to build your site around an SEO mold instead of just linking freely to others and building it the best way you can to help your readers.
Any advice for my site specifically?

I'm actually going to do a post on this on my site at some point.
I've been doing SEO for a while. I first hopped into internet marketing in 2002, and have been doing SEO for myself and others since meta-tags actually mattered.
Truthfully, SEO is more about what not to do that what you should do. For example: it isn't a good idea to link to a bad site/one that is considered a "bad neighborhood" (a spammy site with 934580435839 outbound links, for example.) And don't get the idea that you have to write for the search engines…while it is true that you should try to hit a keyword or two in your title/h2/h3/h4 tags, the best way to optimize your site is to build backlinks, and the best way to build backlinks is to have your readers link your site around the internet. And the best way to get them to link your site around the internet is to write content worth linking to.
Your site has age, which definitely helps–age is a big part of Google's algo. Just keep building links where you can, and if possible, get some links to your deepest pages. A good balance of front-page and deep-links will do wonders to your search engine positions.
One tip: writing about newsy/reference material is a great way to score tons of organic links. For example: "How the X New Tax Changes Affect You." People will come from Google, click your site, link it elsewhere and your site earns a whole bunch of new credibility. For best results, you have to get these kind of posts up fast. (There's a reason why all the US sites are writing about the tax return delays from the IRS…tons of people are searching for/linking to these articles)

Ooooh I missed something. You should try to cut down on your URL length/words.
Example: http://www.howtosavemoney.ca/s…..llite-dish
Chance that to http://www.howtosavemoney.ca/savelog/free-tv-no-cable-canada
No one is searching for "and throw out your satellite dish." Those are just filler words. If someone is looking for free TV, they aren't interested in throwing out a satellite dish, so have only the relevant kewords in the link structure. This can be easily remedied inside WordPress; there are a few plug-ins available, but I prefer to do it by hand. Sometimes you want some filler words software wants to get rid of…"how to wash your car" for example, would be whacked by the software to "wash-your-car." In that case, the "how to" is probably important to the keyword!
That doesn't mean you should start changing your titles, just the URLs. From a human interest perspective "and throw out your dish!" is pretty interesting, and would make for a good/catchy title in the 10 returned search results. Does that make sense?
One more comment: http://www.howtosavemoney.ca/s…..best-value
You have a link in the text: You can read through our complete guide to the Air Miles rewards program to get all the details, but this post will lay out the top 5 Air Miles reward choices that will give you the best value, and here they are.
I would change those kind of links to just "air miles rewards program." The reader is going to see complete guide anyway, and the search engine is going to see "air miles rewards program." No reason to throw four more words in for the search engine to decipher/weight. Stick with the money-word!

Great advice, thanks JT! I will try and implement some of those tips when I have the time.
Kind of wishing I was using Wordpress, but I'm using drupal. I can still edit the links by hand no problem though. Having a bunch of redirects is ok is it? Google probably won't reindex a bunch of my posts for a good long time after I make the change either, correct? So I could be waiting a long time before I see any material impact from these changes.

Redirects are no big deal, older sites can have many thousands of them. If you have a sitemap, Google should find the new urls easily. Do you have a sitemap registered with Google Webmaster Tools? That is important, as well.
You won't have to wait as long as you think. Honestly, I wouldn't both to go back and change it now, just note it for the future. It isn't a tweak that will get you from #50 to #3, but it will make a difference from, say, 5 moving up to 2-4 or from 13 to 9.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I do have a sitemap. Need to check and see if it has been submitted lately. Thanks again!
