Getting a Little Discouraged – Honest Feedback Requested

I've been blogging now for 2 months and am getting a little discouraged with the lack of traffic.

Some statistics:

PR: Still 1

Alexa 7/29:  4.2 M

Posts:   30

Technorati Authority: 453

Klout: 25

Alexa 9/25: 363,955

Over the past 30 days: 620 visits, 4.9 pages/visit, 5.48% Bounce Rate, 2.18 time on site, only 150 of the 620 visits are non Yakezie.  According to Google I have 2625 links to my site, 358 search queries, 3000 impressions and 110 clicks.  I have been visiting Yakezie and non-Yakezie sites and commenting almost daily.  I have also submitted my url to about a dozen directories.  I am working on a guest post and know that I have to pursue this more aggressively.  Visitors have been averaging 20 and were as high as 42.  I started the week at 29 visitors and went down hill all week to 9 yesterday.

The support from the Yakezie community in general has been unwavering.  When I have asked for help I have been given more than I asked for, pretty amazing stuff!  I am part of a remarkable group of individuals as well – Fall Team 4 and could not ask for anything more of them, they are primarily the reason I have progressed to where I am today.

I only made 1 post this week and I'm pretty sure that is why my numbers are down. I do enjoy blogging but I'd also like to make a little money at some point.

What I would like to ask is what should I be doing differently?   Are my numbers where they should be after 2 months?

The only thing I would tell you to do differently is to not worry about the money and your stats so much.  To have a PR 1 after 2 months is very impressive.  Honestly, give yourself a year before you become discouraged.

For now, focus on writing great content and posting at least 3 days a week.  Continue to comment on others' blogs.  Guest post.  Maybe only check your stats once a week.  Submit your posts to carnivals and host carnivals.  The traffic will come, and later, so will the money, but that isn't the thing to think about now. :)

Echo what Mom's Plan said.

Don't expect to make any money or set the world on fire for the first year of blogging. I didn't make any money for the first 11 months. It also took me much more time to get to be a PR 1 than you, so you're doing fine.

Just maintain what you're doing and you should be good!

You should be encouraged by those numbers. As Melissa said, having a PR after 2 months is great. It took me over a year to get one!

If you consistently write great posts and continue to network, the money will come. Try to ignore your stats for the next few months and just continue your hard work, then update this thread with your new numbers.

Paul, I am sure you pretty much knew what would be responses to your posts. Still you posted to get some words of encouragement.

Probably asking you not to look at stats won't help you either, as you will look any way similarly asking you not to think about money won't help either. Each time you come across a sponsored post on some other site, you will feel bad about your blog. these are the feeling you can't get over no matter how hard you try.

A simple fun for me was to see one or two more visitors than previous day, seeing few more exta links on webmaster tool did help as well. Do a search with your sitename and see google search results, you'll get fun seeing it increassing.

Just gave you some clues, blogging won't be funny unless you find your own fun. Be worried about money and stats, as they will keep you motivated to write, and make the journey full of fun.

Frugaltoad,

Blog because you love it.  Interact with yakezie because you love it.  If you do either because you are worried about stats you aren't going to blog for the years to come!

Your site is great just keep writing.

So if I understand everyone, quite your whining and keep writing. Wink

I truly did not think I would make money for at least a year and am not worried about it.  I am enjoying the blogging and thqt is why I am doing it.  I think what was a little discouraging was to see my numbers tank regardless of what I was doing.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I think you're doing well in the first 2 months, in terms of stats. No need to worry there, at all.

Having said that, don't focus on the stats or even worry about all those things right now. It truly accomplishes next to nothing at 2 months to analyze things that much. I speak from experience:)

Are you enjoying blogging, and interacing with other bloggers here at Yakezie? If yes to both, I think you're on the right track already. Have fun and keep up the good work!

Paul,

As everyone else has said, you are doing great! I always enjoy your posts. You doing quite well. I have still not had time to even look at Technorati at all. I need to soon.

I recently saw a dip in my stats and there is no reason for it (as I have been told). Keep up the good work and it will come – that's what everyone has told me. (I am, after all, no expert). :) You can do it!!

As always, shoot me an email if you have any questions…

Check out this thread as a good benchmark

I was 6 months in with only 900 visits/month so you are actually doing great for only 2 months in.

Frugal Toad, for 2 months those are great stats!  That's awesome that you have a PR  (Congrats!)… I don't have one, but am trying to build my site and not worry about that for now.  I'm trying to focus on providing great content and learning through my experience.  :)  You'll get there don't worry.  Blogging is a great hobby that comes with many added benefits that has potential to turn into income.

If you think you're going to be making big bucks after two months then be prepared for major dissappointment.

Work now because you want to build up your site and because you love.  If after 2 months money is your motivator then you honestly won't be blogging very long.

Two months is nothing in the grand scheme of things.  See where you are after 6 months.

Another thing, I just clicked through to your site and it takes an awfully long time to load.  Could just be my browser right now, but if it's always like this you could be losing visiters before they ever see your content.

The problem is you have been blogging for only two months.

Trust me–it takes a long time to build up an audience. I've been at it for three years now, but only saw great stats after a year and a half. That is a year and a half of writing great content that probably no one read–but I did it anyway because I love my subject, and I love to write!

Also, I did not make any money for a year, and after one year I became a staff writer at another site (still am–My Dollar Plan), which is where my sole earnings came from. I did not start to make decent income until almost two years.

Those are really good stats for only two months.  I think after two months I barely had 10 readers a day, so you're well ahead of that.  PR and traffic from search engines will build, and I'm pretty sure your site is so new that you wouldn't get a lot of credibility there.  The only real thing that can change that is time.

Just post consistently and don't get discouraged.  My Yakezie.com post last week was based almost exactly on your experience.  Feel free to e-mail me at any time if I can help!

I would think of it as my journal, if you used the write journals/diaries then you know that nobody would ever read them but you wrote it anyway right? I get discourage sometimes too but what do I know, my blog is still new too. It's a way of thinking, don't think of it as a job where you expected income, but as a fun rewarding hobby

Of all the stats you gave, I quoted the few that stuck out for me. 620 visits in the 2nd month is pretty awesome, probably more than I had when I started (I know my first month was 200ish). I know you're concerned about it being mainly yakezie traffic since it's not as "earned", but that traffic might link to you in roundups and lay some ground work for google authority and search traffic.

Which brings me to my next point. Google picking your post to rank #1 for a search depends on a few things… how you write a post, build links to it, etc. But some of it is just luck and enough content to have a chance for something to stick. So at 30 posts, you might not have hit the Google lottery yet. Of all the search traffic CFB gets, a large majority goes to maybe 10-20 posts out of 700+. Most sites find that too, you get one post ranking for something worthwhile and your traffic will start to increase. Google also needs to find your site to be a bit of an authority, and that might not happen until 6 months in, so keep going!

I'd echo what everyone else has said. You are far ahead of what a lot of us here experienced when we first started so don't be discouraged :)

You have a great start compared to my humble beginnings. Keep plugging away and try to get more posts up. New posts = new content for people to visit. Getting on a constant schedule is helpful, particularly early on.

I will say that 2 months in, I was a PR of 0, I had no technorati or klout score.  I think I had the same average daily visitors…and believe me that takes a lot of TIME to increase.  You are doing well I would say.
