I read about this on the Fatwallet forums :
http://www.fatwallet.com/forum…..e/1129086/
Apparently a company named Getty Images owns a large amount of stock photos and is aggressively pursuing copyright infringement claims against people using any of theirimages.
It seems they send around threatening letters demanding you pay them money to settle copyright infringement claims.
I also found this website about the topic : http://extortionletterinfo.com/
THey have an example demand letter claiming $1,300 : http://extortionletterinfo.com…..er-web.pdf
Just FYI. Something to be aware of when you're picking images to use.
Getty may not have a legitimate claim to damages but I'm sure none of us want to deal with nastygrams from lawyers. To be safe, I'd always use graphics that you know are free or that you legally pay for.

BTW, I don't know if this is 'old news'. I searched the forums here for 'getty' and didn't see anything.

They are one of many companies going after individuals who use their images without authorization. I always make sure that I select images available for commercial resuse, but I don't use that many pictures to start with.

Thanks for the information on this. I agree, nobody wants nastygrams. If anyone gets pictures legitimately, yet still receives a letter like that, it's best to fight it instead of capitulating. Such bullying tactics can be a bit ridiculous sometimes.

Getty has been doing this for ages. I have seen lots of this over the years and it always seems to come from Getty, it seems like scaring small site owners is there main source of revenue. I have seen people fight it and it tends to get dropped before it got very far. The best advice is to make sure you have the rights to the pictures you use.
I tend to use flickr to find images that have a creative commons image. this post can show you how to find them http://www.skelliewag.org/a-co…..es-162.htm. I wish that I had more time to find great images, because I think that it is something that really makes a difference to the look and feel of a blog.

I have a ton of old images from all over before I understood the rules and whatnot, but now I only use images that are 100% legal. I started going back replacing old ones but it takes a ton of time and work on 500+ posts.

I use search.creativecommons.org to find free pics to use. I definitely don't want a nasty legal letter.

I was just going to ask where the best place is to find images when I saw your reply. Thanks Henry & FSYA. I'm in that gray area where I think my images are legal but not 100% sure. I'll be changing what I do for future posts.

I got feedback from readers saying that I should try more images so I've also started using Flickr creative commons. I think I'm doing it right because I paste in the code right from their website in, so the 'hover' shows the name and links back to their site.

This worries the hell out of me and I worked in graphics for years so I always try and keep it legal. Problem is when others write for my sites I worry they may ignore how I told them to use imagery.

There never seems to be enough good common creative use photos on Flickr. I end up paying for stock photos from iStockPhoto.com to cover myself.
