I setup a new site recently but did not create a gmail account unfortunately.
I just discovered some x&@xx! created a gmail account with the name of my site.
What are my options, if any? Is this a violation of Google's terms of service?

Try my frugal toad at gmail
You should be fine. It's the name of your legal site.

It's a different site Jai. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I want the gmail account to be the domain name of my new site but someone already setup a gmail account with that name. I want to know if there is a way to have google close that account. I think I already know the answer is no but it just does not seem right that someone can use the registered domain name and setup a gmail account.
Anyone have a suggestion on what can be done about this?

There isn't much you can do at this point..
The other users have just as much a right to that gmail name as you do.

That is what I thought but wanted to put the question out there.
Lesson learned! Setup your email, facebook, twitter, and other accounts as soon as you setup your domain. Of course if I had paid for a private domain registration I don't think this would have been an issue.

Unless it's trademarked you probably don't have any recourse.
If you are on self-hosted Wordpress you can probably set up your own email account like: admin@frugaltoad.com

I just set up a new blog myself without checking gmail as well. Unfortunately, the name was taken so I just added the word "blog" at the end (iam1percentblog@gmail.com).
See if thefrugaltoadblog@gmail.com is available. Otherwise, try Yahoo or Hotmail.

unfortunatelly they can't do anything about it. same with domain names, I had a boss in the past that was obsessed with buying every domain name you can think of, this is about 10 years ago. It really is first come first serve.

How about toad@thenewsite.com (or whatever)? It's not a huge deal to setup vanity addresses that just pass mails to whatever Gmail address you want. In fact, most hosts will offer you a CPanel to do it incredibly easy.

I use google apps and have my vanity email address set up thru gmail. Its super simple to do. Of course this is possible if you have a self-hosted site.

I just use my pop account through gmail. It allows me to use a @modestmoney.com e-mail but with the flexibility to have it combined with my other e-mail accounts. I'm actually surprised that so many people use a @gmail.com account instead of one with their own domain.

This is what I do too. I have all of my emails set up for my individual domains, but they all come to a single gmail account (that I can also reply from).

When they receive a reply from you, does it show them the address that they originally emailed? Right now, I have separate gmail accounts, but have them forwarded to my main gmail… but it would be ideal if I could hit reply and it would show the return address as the one they originally emailed.

Corey, play around with google apps (webmaster tools)- that way you don't have to create a gmail email account. Your vanity one will be hosted in gmail.
Alternatively you can go to GMAIL>Mailsettings>Accounts>Send Mail as> add the second email address. This way when you reply it auto selects the email address the correct email.
Hope this helps.

Usually it does show the address they originally emailed. Sometimes it shows that with a little "via" link that includes the gmail address it went through. It depends on how the end user's email headers are set up.

I setup my gmail account to let me send as Eric@narrowbridge.net. I suggest using a custom domain rather than gmail address because it looks much more professional.

I find it really frustrating to search for domain names and find that most are taken by squatters… but unfortunately, without a trademark there is not much you can do.
One thing you could do is add the ".com" to the gmail — is that taken?

I guess the best way to do this with gmail is to create your own email acct with your host name like info@yourhostname.com. You can get all the features like any of a gmail acct since your email acct will be hosted on google server. Let me know if you need help in creating one such.
