Just wanted to give the community a heads up that the Go Daddy site was hacked. So don't freak out if you site or email is off line.

They weren't hacked actually, anonymous DDOS'd them.  They didn't take any information, just pulled their DNS offline.

And from what I saw this affected hosted sites not sites that registered through them.

What exactly does DDOS'd them mean? Anyone know why Anonymous hit GoDaddy?

Because GoDaddy is the worst? They hacked them before, because of SOPA. Now's the time to switch your hosting, if you got hit!

SEES means distributed denial of service. Basically, by using thousands of computers to connect to the same server at once, it is possible to overload it's capacity and make it unavailable to others.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

A lot of people think it had something to do with Godaddy's support of SOPA but the chatter on twitter seems to suggest otherwise. In any case, almost all hosts get hit every once in a while. My host (mediatemple) was hit pretty hard earlier this year. I wouldn't necessarily make any moves based on this. Nowhere is safe. WP Engine might be your best bet, but even they would have gone down from an onslaught this large and they aren't cheap.

That said, you SHOULD move hosts because Godaddy sucks.

Right. From what I understand, this affected sites that use their DNS (including those that are hosted there, but registered elsewhere). If you have domains registered there but host it elsewhere, it's unlikely that you were affected.

Have to agree with Kyle. GoDaddy is awful.

Awhile back I was working with a premium plugin and consulted the wiki – under troubleshooting there was a GD-specific problem. The solution said, "Switch to a decent host that doesn't throttle its users to make more money. Like anyone other than GoDaddy." It made me laugh.

This is correct, I use them as my registrar but that's it.  My DNS and everything is pointed elsewhere and I had no outages that I was aware of.

Interesting. Godaddy is sending out an email about this.

"The service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables. Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented a series of immediate measures to fix the problem."

No mention of any DDoS

I might just be a little opportunistic here, but you can get a discount signing up at Hostgator (what I use) if you use coupon code YAKEZIEBLOG. (Affiliate code, though I have links that pay more. This one gets you a discount so I would rather take less.)

I would think all shared plans have to throttle at some point.  Some do it more aggressively than others.

Okay, I've been using GoDaddy for nearly a year, and you guys have made me nervous. I'd love to hear a couple recommendations (shoot me an email if recommendations aren't appropriate here). Hostgator? And is switching hosts relatively painless?

Thanks!

I use GoDaddy for domains but not hosting. Yes, I understand why people hate them but I've never had a negative experience with them — and I'm lazy. So, GoDaddy it is. At least until I personally have a reason to switch.

I use Go Daddy primarily because I was offered free hosting for a year… Perfect opportunity to begin a blog, or so I thought. Having a breach like this concerns me about renewing next year. Is it difficult to change hosts?

Not really. Some hosts will do the migration for you, but even if they don't… Copy everything over to new host, backup and re-import the database, then make sure everything is working (can modify hosts file on your computer to point the domain to the new server to check it out before changing DNS), and last but not least switch the DNS to point to new host. Boom. Done. And with no downtime.

Sounds more complex than it is, though you can still burn a decent amount of time doing it.

Awesome. Thanks for the reassurance.
