Since Wednesday April 25th the Google organic search traffic that is coming to one of my sites is 67% lower than on similar days during the last few months.
There was no message in Webmaster Tools from Google and the PR is still 3. The site is active and gets a number of new posts per week.
Have you seen something like this before? What could be the reasons? Can someone please confirm that this happens more often and is just a temporary thing?

I think there can be wild swings on any given day. Earlier this week, I had a day with 4X my normal search visitors. The next day, it was back to normal.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

There was a G update called Penguin related to over-optimization. Do a google search on Penguin Update.

There have been a ton of updates relating to optimization and content. You probably have not been penalized, but rather have been the victim of an algorithm change.

Yeah, Penguin launched on the 24th, so that definitely the issue. For others that may have seen changes earlier, there was also a Panda update on the 19th.

Thanks for pointing out the Penguin update. That must be it. I don;t understand why my site was hit.
I've checked the posts from Google on this.
Google has a form where you can report if you think that your site has been hit unjustified by this update.
Here is the link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEVxdmdRWFJRTjRoLWZVTHZkaTBQbkE6MQ&ndplr=1
I have used it for my site. Not sure if it works. Anything else I could do?

I'd give it a week before you really worry. Let the algo settle and see how it rolls out. I've seen instances where traffic slows then picks up again.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I've gone from about 100-120 Google searches a day down to 20-40. Hopefully it goes back to normal but this was definitely an eye-opener. I've never been affected by any of the other changes, so this was a first.
If my traffic stays down permanently I really have NO CLUE as to what I did wrong. I'm pretty sure I haven't done anything to deserve the Penguin smackdown…

From what I've read, Google only puts out that form when they think they may have gone to far. So perhaps the Penguin update will be updated in a few weeks to fix things.

This update is horrible. There doesn't seem to be any logic behind what gets hit and what gets improved. There's a lot of garbage ranking high and a lot of good sites got buried.

This is purely an anecdotal observation of my own, but it appears Google went after every single high-adspend niche from pharmacy to webmaster sites to finance and others. And, yeah, I had a site get absolutely decimated in this latest update, despite having very good traffic/time on site figures that would, in my view, be indicative of quality.
I keep telling myself it won't last, but who knows?
For what it's worth, I've noticed very serious deterioration in the quality of sites that appear for any given keyword. It's beyond awful for some phrases.

Really interesting to hear that alot of you have been hit by the latest Google Update. What have people done to rectify the situation?
I've noticed that alot of the sites here have been hit and PR was taken, even by some of the big sites. I haven't been hit yet (touch wood) but would be interesting to see what you all are planning to do moving forward

Got hit last April and literally took me almost 9 months to recover. Very frustrating.

I will say, that my PR on some of my sites definitely got his last month, but through all of the Panda/Penguin updates my traffic only goes up. And I know Im not doing anything different, especially compared to the quality of sites that are getting hit… everything is always a mystery with G.

I'm probably being optimistic, but I know that my traffic dropped over the spring and summer months the past year. It has been a super warm spring most places plus it is starting to be graduation time – which takes up visitor's normal web searching time.
Could the drop just be seasonally related instead of Google algorithm related?

IMHO, I get a bit insane when I overfocus on my traffic. If you let it, your psyche can go up and down along with the traffic levels. My personal strategy is keep a sideways glance on occasion, keep doing what I'm doing, and be glad that my income and self worth don't rely on Google.
I expect that over time, if my site is quality, it will prosper, but like anything else, look at the overall trends (year over year) and don't worry about small blips up and down.
For those out there who are FT bloggers, it is a totally different issue for you guys.

I agree with you that there is a seasonable influence during the year. This drop exactly on April 25th is too steep to be seasonable and caused by something else.

Ugh, I got hit with another PR downgrade, but at least my SE traffic seems to be stable.
Google is turning more and more evil.
