Well, it seems we finally got noticed …

The Globe and Mail (major national news paper here in Canada) appears to have picked up our story that Canadian Capitalist promoted this week about how we saved $9300 importing our Subaru Outback.

Great news for exposure but our site is SUPER slow right now …

Any suggestions on how to make things speed up?  We'd hate to lose readers … using WP Super Cache already.

There's not really all that much you can do at this point.  I guess you could temporarily host the images at a free image host or something..at least reducing the total amount that has to be downloaded from your server.

You're probably on shared hosting?  An upgrade to VPS might do the trick…I'd talk to your host.

Thanks JT – my images actually come fro URLs – flickr mainly.  I don't serve them up myself.

I may need to look @ hosting.  I have a free host right now and yes, it is shared as far as I know.  I figured we'd use the free host until we decided if we wanted to keep blogging and/or exceeded our free space limit.

Did you turn on "Preloading" ? Very important to have that turned on, and do you have "WP Super Cache" set to "full" with "mod_rewrite" with compression turned on? This is the fastest option…

Check your WP Super Cache settings and ping me via email if you need any info :)

P.S. Congrats on the feature!

congratulations first of all! that is great news and one that many of us might never ever experience.

as for hosting, depends on your host company i supposed. i know for example that godaddy allows you to upgrade on the spot, and then if you were to downgrade few days back, you get a prorated refund for the unsed portion of your monthly hosting cost (on the more expensive upgrade).

Thanks Sunil!

The host I use is actually free for members of a particular forum.  There are monthly bandwidth limits, an a 500 mb total storage space on the freebie – but until I exceed either, well, free is as frugal as we can get!

Question:

Should I make a page or something that shows where/when/who from national syndicates link to us?  I've seen this, I think, @ squakfox and some other sites.

Opinions?

(today was so exciting.  Sorry to keep posting about this but 1600 page views when we've never had more than 500-600 is mind boggling for us as we're such blogging noobs)

moneysense.ca (Canadian Capitalist) linked to my article – i'm guessing that Rob Carrick saw it there and read our series and liked it enough to tell his readers about it.

Yes, Rob actively looks around for fresh, mostly Canadian, personal finance content with a fairly big focus on blogs. It's really great that a large media site is proactively rewarding bloggers for writing good content. I wrote a guest post on Young And Thrifty and I was discovered by him the same way. He also linked to my article on price comparison sites today.

Not nearly as much traffic as last time, but anything is better than nothing! Congrats SPF on the success. You guys deserve it!

Hell yeah!  Toot that horn!

Mentioning where you get mentioned is an excellent way to establish credibility.  As a reader I think more of a blog/site when I see media mentions–and as a webmaster it makes me even more likely to link to that site myself.

Grab that horn and make it loud enough the whole world can hear it!

Sorry I am late to the party, in terms of optimization, JT_McGee mentioned hosting images elsewhere. Since I was with blogger originally, all my images are on Google Photo (Picasa) and I have continued to do so for my blog posts. All my images point to a picasa web album. I tend to have nearly 4 per posts when I do a dividend investing company analysis. I'd like to think it helps spread the load.

I practically never have any images hosted on my host servers. They are all external (and legal).
