I am getting requests to guest post from people that don't have blogs … and they don't seem to try to build links so I was curious what was up with that? I assume everyone is getting those requests as well. I don't tend to follow up much but I was curious as to their benefits ?!?
Here is a quote form a part of the message:
I was wondering if you allow guest posts. I would love to contribute an original article for thepassiveincomeearner.com. It would not be anything promotional and I am willing to write for free. I would just be be very happy if my article finds a home at your site. Are you willing to give me an opportunity?
What's the catch? Maybe I should ask them…

They probably aren't mentioning the link out somewhere is all.
I've gotten the whole 'I'll write a free and informative article geared to your readers' spiel before and it ends up they just want 'one small link' to some site or other.
If I don't know the author I'll ask for examples of their work to see where they have written, what the links are, and the quality.

Yeah I get these all of the time. Once you say that you will receive a guest post, they most nearly all include a link at least in the by-line area.

Before jumping on the person, if you sell links – then I always say (I just used this reply this morning):
Thank you for your interest in My Journey to Millions. My Journey to
Millions is a PR3 with an Alexa ranking of around 70K. If you are
linking to anything except a personal blog (i.e. debt settlement
company) I insist on a sponsorship fee.
Please let me know if you'd like rates.

99% of the time they will have a link to a business. They are most likely being paid to get that link published on other sites.

These are all scams… I have gotten overwhelmed by a Marc Brown who is trying to advertise a debt settlement company for free. Someone creating an email address with the name Myrina Stein, which after a Google search seems to be a reputable name that they are trying to rip off. I forgot the other womans name they constantly try and use.
Im also getting annoyed by the repeated comments I throw away as spam, they all say "thanks for the article, it saved me much time"… same comment from 1,000 different people…improper English always.

Myrina Stein was the person. I have not entertained them as it did not feel right.
@My Journey to Millions
Did you ever get results from your reply?

I have a pretty good standard response I send back to these people. I don't really want to post it here but if you email me: sustainablepersonalfinance AT gmail DOT com i'll fire it to you.
It pretty much stops this activity from non-legit guest posters and those unwilling to advertise.
I don't get many requests these past 2 months.

As a general rule, I ignore any requests that start out the email with a link to my website. It's almost always a template which means they're sending the same email to 200 other bloggers.
I've been a sucker for publishing some of these guest posts recently though, and need to start being a lot more careful with who I let link out.

I agree with what the others have said above. I have started doing what Evan suggested and letting them know they could pay for a sponsored post. I do not hear back from the majority of them.

I've had a similar experience to the others here. After following up i'll find there's an embedded link to "debtconsolidation.com" or something like that. If it's not coming from a fellow Yakezier or PF blogger, I usually charge, though not always.

Just used a similar response this morning. Thanks for that – it was much more professional than what I was going to say!

I received an email from an ed @ creditrepair (dot) org ….. has anyone ever received anything from him about guest posting? The site has an Alexa ranking below 200k, which is better than my site, he isnt Yakezie…and it wasnt an automated email trying to pawn off a product.
What do you guys think? Should I just give him a free guest post and see whats up…? Im guarded because of all the spam I get, and that I havent had anyone guest post on my site yet.
Thanks!

If it looks like a business site ask for a sponsored post.
There is an example above and i'm happy to share my canned response via email also.

No, they're not all scams. They are people trying to make a buck w/o spending money – entirely different thing. Each and every one of these requests should be answered, and answered respectfully but with the caveat that if they care to link to a business the post is considered sponsored and as such rates need to be negotiated.
I had a request from a writer who wanted to swap posts. They would post on my site and I would get to post on their PR4 site. I responded with an advertising inquiry and turned the transaction into $325. As MJTM stated, never close a door that has been opened to you – you never know where curtousey and a sales pitch can get you.

Your comment that you use didnt come through? What do you say to these people? If you dont want to type in here, please email me at justinweinger@aol.com This one specific site confuses me though, they say they offer free advice, I cant see a product they sell on their site (creditrepair"dot" org).
Personal Finance Journey, if you see this, give me a heads up on your thoughts, since I notice they link to your site in their resources section.
Thanks everyone.

To answer someone's question above – 9 times out of 10 I don't get a response, but that 1 response can be worth $50 to $125…so is it worth cutting and pasting that reply? I think so lol

Good point Evan. It's very rare but sometimes they do convert.

Interesting, I never thought about turning these inquiries into a paid sponsored post. The latest incarnation for me is "Emily Jones", connected to the OakView Law group, a debt consolidation law firm. I declined, not only because the the lawyer dude that pops up on the screen when you visit their site seems a little "greasy".
