Hi,
Where do you draw the line between a true guest post from a blogger versus a link builder (ad/sponsored) post masquerading as guest post?
I am guilty of having done one and I have one sitting in my draft inbox and to me, a guest post sort of need to point to a blogger/blog site and I am curious if it's just me… Don't get me wrong, the content is perfectly adequate but the by line practically has no links for anyone to follow the guest post author. (I have seen those around so I am not the only one and it's easy to spot an add 'guest' post)
At which point do you highlight the post as a Sponsored Post or do you end up changing the post with your flavor on it?
Thoughts?

here is a way to deal with it. If the links go to the home page using the name of the site — that's usually o
kay.
If the links go to relevant and helpful articles — that's okay.
It's basically a commercial paid link type posts when
Links is heavy on keywords and pointing to homepage or non-article pages — I usually say no to these.

If the links go to a business or business related site, I call it sponsored and charge for it.
If the links go to the author's blog or another blog, or a site like Wikipedia, I host it as a guest post.

I agree with college. Regardless, I edit every post to make sure it is up to my standards.

For the first 1.25 years I blogged, I allowed free guest posts linking to business websites, as long as the post was good. However, I have since tightened the requirements so that if the post links to anything but another blogger's website, then it falls in the sponsored post category.
It's kinda funny actually because now that I've started rejecting people looking for links to a business site, I have stopped getting as many requests. It's almost like these guys work off of some kind of "black" vs. "white" list of what sites allow what! haha

It is so true! Once you reject one, they stop! If you allow one, you get inundated with a ton of requests!

Thanks everyone. I like College's definition. This is what I was leaning towards.
I just did not feel good about calling a post a guest post when in fact it is a sponsored post. Especially when the by line has no way of really getting the guest author to follow up with the post.
Cheers!

I still occasionally let businesses post free guest posts if the content is pretty decent. Otherwise I do like the others here and reserve the free guest posts for fellow bloggers. :)
If the post content is coming from there I just label it as a guest post either way, but if it's a sponsored review or I wrote the post on their behalf then I will mention that.

I operate the same as Invest it Wisely. I always label them as guest posts and a few free ones to squeak in from time to time. I would only list sponsored if I wrote the post.

Good timing I guess – I just saw the guest post you have :)
I guess I am curious if you get negative comments on non-blogger guest posts. I may be trying to be to logical about what a guest post versus a sponsored post … In my mind, if you monetized from it, then it's pretty much a sponsored post.
Thanks!

I tried talking to one of these people, and when I realized they didn't have anything valuable to offer, I shut them down. I get a fair amount of emailing asking for "guest posts", and if the person asking doesn't share their own site in the email, I just ignore it.

I take free guest posts only if the content is stellar. Some of the offers I get are pure crap and for their link building purposes. But who doesn't like articles written for them!

I accept guest posts from fellow bloggers, but I charge for any post from a non-personal site. I highly suggest trying to flip these fake guest posts into profitable sponsored posts. I usually put up 3-6 sponsored posts a month. 1 or 2 of those posts are from flipping "guest posts" that are obviously more than that…
Shameless plug, that said, I actually do the flipping mentioned above for 9 other Yakezie sites that simply don't feel like it. http://yakezie.com/forums/blog…..vertising/
Just email me at budgetingfunstuff *at* gmail *dot* com if you'd like some help with the generally time-wasting offers.

I second this. If the links are to a fellow blogger, then I'll put it up as a guest post. But, if the links are to a business site (they sell material or services), then I'll charge them with a sponsored post.
