I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post, but I am thinking of opening up my blog to guest posts once or twice a month. If you have guest posters on your blog, what has been your experience? Would you recommend it? Are there any drawbacks? Thanks.

I have found a couple guest posts a month to be a great thing. It takes the writing burden off of you a few times and a month and changes things up for your readers.

Be picky and be sure to review everybody's submissions well before posting. Everybody makes mistakes, but some make more than others. I love guest posts since they offer different pov's and material while giving me a day off. :-) I would suggest adding a page explaining your guest post guidelines for the ease factor (I actually made my page by conglomerating others I saw, like at FMF).

Thanks for the tips. I have added a few guest posts so far. What do you do if you get a guest post you don't really think is right for your blog?

I haven't had to deal with that yet thankfully. I would have to say something like "Thank you so much for taking the time to write this for BFS, but it may not be just right for our audience. Do you have something in mind that may be closer to a personal finance story? Those usually go over very well!"

Make sure you understand what you want in and from a guest post and who you are willing to accept one from. There are many out there that use guest posts as a form of text link advertising.
I generally prefer article from fellow PF bloggers.
Then again, if the information is really good…

Agreed – its your blog, you do what you like on it. There are LOTS of people offering up 'free' guest posts, which mostly link back to heavily advertised websites. If you don't want to, then simply say no.

Hello Melissa!
That is always a tough situation. In the end, I am always honest about the article (though not brutally), and I offer suggestions for how it can better fit my audience. I think using the phrase "I don't feel that my audience will…" or something like that will take the judgment off of you and make it a little bit easier to handle–after all, the guest poster is looking to wow your audience, right?
