If you use 'admin' as your Wordpress user name, change it asap – and your password.

I use a plug in called Limit Login Attempts.  You set the number of times someone from the same IP can attempt to login.  If someone does try to login in more than that number of times, they are locked out for a period of time (that you specifiy).  The plugin then sends you an email to let you know that someone attempted and was locked out.

This morning, I had 42 notifications that someone had attempted to login in using 'admin' (which is not my user name).

This is the most I've ever received in one day.

Be aware that hackers are always out there trying to get control of your blog!!  Don't use 'admin' as a user name (I've also had them try the blog name as user name).  Make your passwords complex and change them!

Yeah, I have had this from time to time as well. Changing your user name is an absolute must!

That is a great start and one that can help, but just changing the admin is not as good as it used to be. I recommend trying out the BruteProtect plugin, which is now owned by Automattic, who is the corporate arm of Wordpress.  Also, if you have been writing for some time and now just want to change your username, you might have to do some database work to get your gravatar to show up properly on older posts.  It uses the user id, not the name as an association!

I use the free version of wordfence which informs me any time there is a login attempt. I get a lot of attempts with "admin" as well. Marie, thanks for the warning.

I used to subscribe to alerts from my security plugin whenever there were hacking attempts. It became so stressful I had to unscubscribe lol. I guess that's not really funny, but I'm sure you guys can relate!

I also use Wordfence and receive notices any time someone tries to login to my site.  Wordfence always gives me the IP address of the person trying to hack my site, and there's a Wordfence function to be able to block certain IP addresses from accessing your site.  Every time someone tries to hack my site, I block their IP address.  I know it seems hopeless (there are so many hackers out there and they can so easily use a different IP address), but it really has seemed to cut down on the number of hacking attempts to my site.  At least I don't have them as often now as I used to.  Now maybe once every 2-3 weeks I'll get a notice that someone is trying to get into my site.  It used to happen a lot more often.
