Has anyone else's Alexa rank gone up?

Since joining the challenge in February, my Alexa ranking fell from over 1.7 million to ~255,000 earlier this week. Since then, it has been slowly going back up. 256k, then 257k, and 258,932 today.

Is this kind of thing normal, or indicative of a problem on my end?

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

Edward,

What has your traffic numbers been like during this same time?

Hank,

My numbers tend to vary wildly, but I average in the low teens of unique visitors per day and have been in that area for the past three months.

I've seen my Alexa Ranking numbers kind of level off and then bounce around a base, up and down around a certain range. But, my traffic has remained pretty constant in a tight range throughout the ups and downs. I know that doesn't help answer your question really, but I thought that might explain a little bit if you saw a big drop in traffic too at the same time.

Edward ounds like you just need to get active commenting on more blogs.  My alexa happened to go up very slightly today, but I suddenly only published 3 posts this week instead of the 5 I had started doing.  Plus I was less active commenting.  So it was not too surprising to see the first increase since my blog was launched.  Not that I'm complaining about a 52K alexa.

Edward it just means that people from yakezie are visiting you less frequently. It happens if you don't post in the forum a lot Laugh Nothing to worry about.

Okay, sounds like it's just normal fluctuation. It's just a bit frustrating since I'm just about to the last big milestone before 200k and it seems like I'm reversing course.

SB, I'll try to incorporate more commenting on the boards. :)

Alexa isn't a good proxy for traffic. My alexa rank has almost doubled from its low point even though my traffic has also doubled since then. Doesn't correlate at all. Hell, my Alexa is currently around 350,000 and I get over 2000 unique visitors a day. Just ignore it. Instead, focus on increasing traffic and maybe CPM (once you're getting more than a few hundred visitors per day).

Wow. That's crazy that your Alexa rank is trending the opposite of your traffic. It's also humbling to think that I'm doing okay and then comparing my traffic to others.

I think the encouragement of the Yakezie Challenge to install the Alexa toolbar probably sets many of those from the challenge who visit your site quite apart from the average internet user (who probably doesn't have the toolbar installed).  As more unique visitors hit your site who aren't from the challenge, the more unique visitors you may have while your Alexa ranking will go up.

I have seen my Alexa climb up too btw.

I've noticed it as well. But like others said, I think it's because I haven't been active in the forums here as much.

It's only one metric out of a ton.  Just establish some sort of marketing plan that you will follow continuously.  Something like a posting schedule, then a list of actions you will take to promote your post, who you will visit/comment, submit to carnivals if you think our writing fits the categories.  You can't just put up a post here and there and expect your numbers not to suffer.  If people come by and find nothing new, they won't have a reason to come back again.

You know by now that Alexa only tracks those visitors who have the toolbar installed.  You need to look at the big picture.  Look at your wordpress stats, your Google Analytics, Sitemeter (if you have it), MozRank, Quantcast, Compete.  They all measure things differently so you need to get a broad view of your site's performance.  One specific metric will not tell you everything you need to know.  Above all, just try to be consistent and don't expect anything to happen overnight (or even within a month for that matter).

Thanks, Eric. I do try to keep to a regular 3x/week schedule and post to Facebook and twitter. I did slack on commenting for a while, but am trying to be more diligent about it. Same with carnivals.

I wasn't so much concerned that a rising Alexa rank was an indicator of falling popularity, but just curious if it had happened to others. At this point, it has dropped back down to where it was before it started rising.

Mine's been going down, but I've also been posting less because of other commitments.

I've had the same thing happen too… I was in the 250s and 260s, but now I'm in the 340s. I was on vacation and I was not visiting blogs like I usually did. But, my traffic has been increasing each month…. it's weird.

Site traffic has increased, but my Alexa has gone up from a low of the 80s or 70s. Since it's not really a critical metric, don't worry about it. Just remember to stay involved and visit your fellow bloggers every now and then!
