Help me figure out how frequently to post my new series

I've been working on and off for awhile on a retirement series (and in a previous thread, you submitted articles I could link to — thanks!). Now I'm wondering how frequently I should post it.

I'm not finished writing it yet, but I'm thinking there will be 10-12 posts in all.

Should I post 1 a week, and have it stretch into the 2.5-3 month range? Advantages — they won't get slammed with retirement info nonstop, and I'll post about other things. Disadvantages — it might take a few weeks to get to the really practical how-tos that could be beneficial sooner.

Or should I post 5x week on the topic, and have it done in two weeks? Advantages — the info is there quickly. Disadvantages — they could lose interest and be overwhelmed if it's too much, too fast.

I usually post 3-4x week max, so that would be a lot.

Or maybe, 2-3 posts in the first week to get started, and then 1x week until I'm done?

Please let me know what you think would be the best route for me to go. I did a poll not long ago and my readers are interested in a retirement series. Many of them told me they know nothing about it and feel really under-prepared. But, I haven't done much at all with retirement or investing on my blog before, and I don't want to frustrate the masses.

The last time I did a series, I did 529s and I ran it all in about a week. I lost around 200 subscribers. It SUCKED.

When we run a "series" set of articles, we typically do one a week with varied content on the additional blogging days…  What we have also done is do a preemptive post announcing the new series, what is will be about and what day (ie every monday) it will be running on.

We have seen good response with doing so in regards to not over / under whelming our readers with a certain subject.

Why did you lose so many subs? What is 529? I like the once a week deal.

I don't know why I lost so many. The 529 plan series was just about saving for your kids' college. I think I either overwhelmed them with too much too fast, or they just genuinely didn't care.

My readers are more frugal living, save money oriented rather than investing (as far as I can tell from the success or failure of past posts) and I'm hoping to keep them on board with the retirement stuff, because it's important!

I think once/week is a good idea even though it will take awhile. I like the idea of doing an intro post. I could do my intro post on a Tuesday and say the rest of the series will run on Wednesdays, with other content on other days of the week for example.

Any other ideas?

I say go with once per week on the same day so that your readers will know what is happening and what to expect. I think as long as the information doesn't overlap, you will be fine with spreading it over 10-12 weeks. That is my $.02.

I agree – have an announcement post saying " we are posting on retirement every monday for the next 4 mondays" or somethign like that – i think you MAY be able to kick it up to 2x/week if you want.

I would vote for once a week, always on the same day, with an announcement post and in each new post the links to previous related articles.

In that way you do not overwhelm you existing visitors and you have the best chance to attract and hook new visitors to your site.

200 subscribers! That's crazy! Well, I like posting your series once a week or even less. A regular series is really cool, but I think you want your regular content in there more. I just started a real estate series on my blog, but since I want to have some progress for each post, I will probably only be doing the series posts once every two weeks or so.

I say start with once a week and go from there.

If I lost 200 subscribers, I'd basically be starting over.  Yikes!

You could make it something like a Monday retirement series (or any day really).  Giving a little time between articles might give readers some time to absorb the content.

But see how it goes.  If you get a great response then maybe you can do 2 or 3 a week?

Definitely no more than once a week for something like that. Spreading these things out help your subscribers (who are interested in that subject) look forward to the next edition. I'd also suggest you release the series on the SAME DAY & TIME each week (& promote this fact in each of the posts).

We do the same thing on the radio when we do special daily/weekly features…it's called "appointment listening"…so in this case it could be "appointment reading" or something like that.

Just my thoughts…

200 subscribers? I'd be a negative 124 if I lost that many!

For series, I recommed once a week. I also recommend that you link back to the previous posts in the series as well. That way, if someone comes in in the middle, she can find the beginning and read all the posts in the series.

Thanks you all! Yeah I was at around 1,000 and then took a big hit and hovered around 800 and haven't really recovered. Sucks!

I'm going to create a static page at the top of my navigation and will link to everything there, as well as other helpful articles and ideas so new visitors can quickly see it and my regulars can find it all in one place.

I guess if I talk about retirement and they all unsubscribe…well…what do ya do.

I have done this exact thing. I also include a line in each post saying "this post is part of a series and the entire series can be found here" with a link.
