I recently put a reference page up on my site titled, "Start Your Own Blog". It's supposed to help the new blogger get started with web hosting, plug-ins, etc. I feel like it could use more, but am not sure what else to add…. What else would the new blogger need to know?

The resource page looks great.

But not only should you have a bunch of resources, I think you should add a few links to articles about blog-related topics such as SEO, how to attract loyal readers, etc.

I disagree, I actually like the layout. I wouldn't give too many choices.

Do you have any pics to go along with the suggestions? I personally like pics better.

One thing I would do, is group the helpful plugins by what they do. For example you could have a section entitled 'grow your traffic'. (call to action) Then include the XML map for better indexing etc.

Since you are appealing to begginner bloggers and you include several plugins, maybe include a 'how-to' video or screenshot walk through?

It looks great so far!

But I have to admit that I did link back to explanatory posts that I wrote for most of the products I mention. So I guess, I would be in favor of this also.

I think this type of page can easily become huge! There is so much to know when starting a blog. Many other blogs have done something similar. I think LaTisha's point about grouping the plugins together is a great idea. Suba at wealth informatics utilized a great tool for having lots of material on one page with the option of expanding groups of material. (http://www.wealthinformatics.c…..groceries/). You could do something like this as well or even do sub-pages.

Personally, I would include other plugins as well, especially security plugins (Sam started a thread about this), but I'm not sure how extensive you want to go.

That's a really great idea!  I believe ChristianPF has something similar up, because I remember browsing a couple sites with a section of this sort and it really helped get me started.

I agree with Corey on both the formatting of the page (once you start adding sections), and on adding security plugins. Security and spam are two things that many of us had to learn after blogging for a while. It would be great to inform a new blogger of these things.

I would also add Hostgator to your lists of hosting companies.

Very timely for me I have to say. I am not new but a returning blogger and I did not remember a lot of plug-ins I used to have in the past. Great page! great idea! I will be utilizing it A LOT. I loved the layout and structure. Easy to use and understand.

Looks good! I say add some visuals like screenshots or a video. Some people are visual or auditory learners, so that way it caters to those who are intimidated by lots of words.

100% you need some screen shots. Make it easy for us! I started my blog back in 2008 with the help of some basic screenshots.

Good idea Tony. I'll have to find some good "how-to" posts, or maybe I'll develop them myself!

Nice page. The only thing I would add is cluster the plugins based on category – grow your traffic (SEO plugins), build a community (commentluv, thank you plugin…), safeguard your blog (security, firewall)… so that it will be easy for people who are looking for a specific one. It will read well too.

I like it Derek. If you threw too much at a beginner, they'll likely become overwhelmed and never actually take action.

Thanks Hunter! I think you're right. I could load up an entire page without spaces, but that's not going to encourage anyone to get started.
