Hello Everyone,
As many of you know I am new to blogging and I have a lot of questions. :) My question of the day is about keywords. Currently I am using the plugin "Wordpress SEO" for all of my SEO needs. This plugin allows you to chose a "focus keyword" for the article. I have two questions. First, does anyone know how I could add more keywords to an article/is it worth it to do so? Second, will search engines only find my articles through the keywords attached to them? Thanks for the help, I just don't know much about SEO.

Yoast, the creator of Wordpress SEO, has a blog where he talks about SEO issues and his plugin. I remember reading one that limiting the plugin to one keyword was intentional. His rationale is that it is hard enough to write a well-written post focusing on one keyword. Trying to rank for two or more reduces quality. That said, if you know what you are doing, you can try using variations of the keyword to capture additional search traffic.
As far as your second question, every single word in your posts is potentially a keyword. Google doesn't care what words you are trying to rank for. It will rank the post for every word and phrase you have, even if not particularly well. I'm on the 76th page of a Google search for "chemical burns" I don't even remember what I've written about that I would have mentioned them!

I use Yoast's SEO too, and sometimes research keywords on the Google keyword tool. It will tell you how many people look for that keyword and if there is a lot of websites competing for said keyword. Sometimes you write a post about "overpaying mortgage" and there are more searches for "pay mortgage early" so you may want to rewrite a bit to target a more popular keyword.

I used Yoast for a while then realized that it didn't play very nicely with thesis – the creators of both have somewhat of a personal battle going on from what I can gather – it's a good tool, just be cautious if you're using it with the thesis theme.

I am about to leave Thesis for Genesis. I have put Genesis on a few of my sites so far and love it! Much more intuitive than Thesis 2.0 and more feature rich than Thesis 1.x. Stay tuned for a plugin I am working on that will help you convert away from Thesis.
