Holy Spam Batman!

I don't know what happened, but so far today, I've gotten 70 spam comments on my blog. Every one of them has a Facebook profile as their website, and they don't include links in the comments themselves, so I'm not sure what the purpose of the spam is in the first place. What they're trying to gain from leaving the comments is irrelevant I suppose, what really matters is how I can manage them better.

I don't mind manually deleting the occasional spam comment, but if I'm going to get 70+ spam comments in one day, I need an automated solution to handle them. Are there any Wordpress plugins anyone can recommend to deal with this?

Thanks!

GASP – Growmap Anti-Spam Bot.  Best spam plugin around.

I've gotten the same thing from Facebook before.  I'm not sure what the purpose is.

Akismet seems to catch almost all spam comments.

Great… thanks. I just started my new site, launched about a week ago, and already have 7 spam comments a day. I don't even think the site has been found by the bots yet, but the spam bots found it somehow.

I'm looking forward to my first real comment. Hopefully this plugin you mention will keep the bots away.Wink

I use a combination of Akismet and Conditional CAPTCHA and it works great for me. It lets real comments through and gets rid of the nasty stuff.

GASP has been working really well for me. Since installing it, I haven't gotten any spam comments.
