Hey guys,

Listening to the radio and hearing all these great new artists.  They can get a number one hit, sell a million albums, be the top downloaded song, to be called a successful musician.  What is the equivalent, in your opinion, for bloggers?  Cool

I don't know the exact answer to this, nor do I think there is a precise answer.

For us, being nominated as a top blog for 2011 by the nationally syndicated newspaper Globe and Mail was pretty freakin' cool.   We didn't win but the recognition, given our site was less than 6 months old was pretty remarkable.

I think I already have since I hit my $2500 a month goal (what I needed to make on average for 4 months straight), but it will really sink in around September when I give my 2 weeks notice at my day job.Laugh

SPF,

I remember that, that was huge!  Congrats again.

Crystal,

You nailed your goal, too.  Wow, so exciting you're gonna drop the hammer down in September.  Good luck!

Both,

Since you two both kind of "made it".  What's next?  Do you have advice for those who haven't made it yet?

That's awesome to hear Crystal!!! :) For me, I'm not sure if there is an equivalent, but I'd love to be a keynote speaker in the realm of finance at some type of prestigious event. As you can tell, I haven't put a lot of thought into it. I'm just trying to get the site to be more profitable, and hopefully get to do it full time. :D Great goal to ponder though. Thank you for the thinking point!

This may sound corny, but when Eric/Narrow Bridge had his Yakezie March Madness a few months back, that my blog actually won it got me thinking that I must be doing something right :)

Ultimately knowing I "made it" would entail getting to the next level in terms of visitors/site traffic, and getting some more mainstream media notice. I've gotten in the Globe and Mail and MSN, linked at Time, but that's it to date.

It's all good though. No matter, I'm simply enjoying every part of blogging thus far in this past 15 months!

Hey Timothy,

You're welcome.  Sounds exciting, to be a finance keynote speaker at a big event.  Are you taking steps to get there?  Good luck to you!

Hey Squirrelers,

Not corny at all.  That too was a big achievement.  Congrats again!  Wow, you got some nice coverage, too.  Do you set new targets and goals since you have hit quite a few?  Glad you are still enjoying your ride after 15 months!

My "next" is hitting $3000 a month, every month.  That will ensure that everything is covered 100% and I'll stop worrying that I'm putting our finances at risk.

My advice to everybody is to set goals and work like nuts to hit them for whatever you want – blogging, saving for a vacation, strengthening a relationship, etc.  There isn't a secret method…just go after whatever you want the most!

This question can be answered differently by everyone, depending on what they're trying to get out of their online presense. If they simply want an extra $100 a month, this would be their "arriving point". If, however, the goal is over $10,000 per month, then the arrival would be equivalent to $10,000. For me, I think I'm leaning more toward the $10,000/mo. rate. While I know that I'm nowhere near this level, I think it's entirely possible – I just have to be willing to put in the time. When I reach $10,000 a month, I will let you all know that I have made it! :)

This is a great thread! I think that for me, I wouldn't measure "making it" from an income perspective, since my ultimate goal isn't do this full time. But, "making it" for me would be to be contacted by a publisher requesting to write a book about investing or personal finance. That would be cool! Or, if I was contacted and asked to speak at a seminar/conference!

I too am probably in it for the recognition more than the money.

I am trying hard to put myself out there an an expert on wealth.  It would be cool to be quoted again in mainstream sites like CNBC.com.

Of course, I am always open to another income stream as well!Smile

I had a real feeling of "making it" when a couple of fellow bloggers mentioned that they were signing up for the Financial Blogger Conference mainly to meet me!  Cool beans!!!  I'm becoming someone to meet!  If that isn't a major confidence booster to a blogger, I don't know what is…

RB40, Kay, and Derek,

Looks like the magic number is $10K/month.  Good luck to you all.  All your blogs are outstanding.  You'll get there one day!

Hey Jacob,

A book deal sounds great.  One day I hope to write a book, too.  I don't know what genre yet as I am a little more splintered than other personal finance blogs.  As for speaking, perhaps you and Timothy can collaborate.  He mentioned the same thing.  Good luck to you!
