I am wanting to have a static 'home' page that anyone can see, but then have some other pages that only registered users can see and comment on – is there a way to do that in wordpress?
Mucho gracias all.

There is a plugin called "members only" that should do what you want. I haven't tried it but from the description it sounds like what you are looking for.

I'm not sure about the members only pages, but the plugin mentioned above should do the trick.
On a side note, when I try to visit familymoneyvalues.com it gives me a 'Problem loading page' error. I assume this is happening to other people too.

Thanks to both of you. Are you still getting the load problem?

Host Gator said that my shared server was undergoing a DNS attack…

I solved the privacy problem by making some of the posts and pages private – so that they had to be a word press user and sign in to the site.
