Does anyone know how to make a good archives page?

Something like Mr Money Mustache's archives page would be nice.

Thanks in advance!

Joe,

You want the Latest Post from each Category Plugin (from Dagon Design):

There are also other plugins as well that do that….

Why do my links get shortened and become unusable whenever I post here?

a quirk of the forum software. it just doesn't like links unless you add them with the toolbar (which doesn't load on mobile devices)

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

I have a list of posts according to time of publication and this can be done using a plug in (if you send me a me a message John would let you know how he did it). However, as a reader I don't find this very useful – usually I am not interested in what Mr Money Moustache or The Money Principle were thinking at particular point in time but in the blog's position on certain issues.

Hence, I like Leo Babauta's way to archive and have been working on something like that for TMP. Thing is, this is hard because it demands (re)-conceptualising your blog and figuring out exactly what it is about (in some detail).

Maria, do you mean like category archives? Each of my posts typically gets 3-4 sub-categories and I have a drill-down menu. So if someone wants to see what I've written on the topic of homeownership, for instance, it is easy to do so. but, yes, going back and adding new categories to old posts was a fair bit of work.

Not really; I have categories but they don't do the job either – too many. I am talking about 3-5 main themes going through the blog and then the selection will have to be manual I suppose. If you wish to know about this….

I'll let you know when ready with it anyway; another incentive to get it done.

Hi Maria,

The plugin I mentioned allows you to sort either by Date or Monthly – it gives you the best of both worlds. And its just one small php file, so its light-weight on resources. You'll have to be able to FTP it up to your plugins folder.

I used to have the entire archive posts sorted by Categories with this plugin, and readers liked that. I've switched back to the usual format though for other monetization reasons…

Cheers

I am interested. Because it still sounds like you are still talking about something that can be done with categories. Set up some "super-categories" of each of those main themes. I do the same thing. Questions, Practical Tips, and "Personal Finance Contrarian" would be my three main themes for my site. Probably 75% of my posts fall into one of those three categories. Those posts get those as a category, plus categories for whatever topics they cover, such as frugality, retirement, or home ownership.

I went with the smart archives reloaded plugin. Yes, it's another plugin, but it's working pretty well.

Thanks for your input!

Genesis has some great options for customizing your archives pages, so I just used that.
