My article is on the front page of Yahoo! Finance since yesterday, 7 ways to prepare for retirement in your 20s.

Traffic has been pretty awesome and I wonder how I can keep some of that traffic spike.

I added a subscription option at the end of the post that Yahoo! points to and hopefully will get some new subscribers, but I would love to hear any tips.

post – Retirement advice for young folks.

What's your best tips on how to keep those random traffic?

Is there a way to tell which posts the subscribers are coming from? I'm on Google Analytic, but not a power user.

Thanks,

-Joe

Ask for an opt-in at the end of the post. That is one of the best ways to build on your current traffic. You have 3 options at the bottom of the post. If you give one option you should see an increase in response. (via Derek Halpern)

That's a good tip. I changed it to RSS or email subscription.

Do you think I should just go down to one? I guess email is the way to go.

Nice job and congrats on the post!  I'm a huge believer in an end of post opt-in as well.  I like the one from Opt-In Skin, since there are so many options for styling it.  You can check it out at the bottom of any of my posts.  I get 1-2 subscribers a day normally, and can easily get a ton on big traffic spike days!

Robert, does opt-in skin work with feedburner too?

Me too. Do they just pick it up or did you submit to them to have  your stuff reviewed? I had one article linked to MSN a year or so ago, and they just picked it up out of the blue.  Was a nice few days!

Joe, do you have an Aweber account?  If not now might be a good time to look into it and try to lock in people for a newsletter.

Or you can direct people to a social account like Facebook or Twitter.  Use a plugin like WP Greet Box and set it up for visits from Yahoo.

Yes it works with feedburner as well as Aweber, mailchimp, and a couple of others.

I'd never even heard of opt-in, good to know, thanks. It's nice if you can take advantage of traffic spikes!

Wow…that's pretty awesome!  Doesn't get much bigger than the front page of Yahoo.  Congrats.

Pop-up box.  Annoying but effective.

The few times that my article for US News got syndicated to Yahoo Finance, my email subs triple (at minimum).  Majority (>90%) are from my pop-up box via Aweber.

Also have them strategically placed at the bottom of the post and my sidebar, but they represent a minority of most new optins.

Congrats on getting your post featured, btw!  Laugh

I hate those pop up boxes with a passion so that's why I haven't put one on yet.

I guess I'll try the WP Greetbox and see if it really works.

Opt-in Skin looks good too, but I'm too cheap to pay $50. Is it worth it?

I don't have Aweber and will go check them out now.

I got on Yahoo! Finance via US news syndication like Jeff.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've noticed that a large chunk of my Yahoo Finance traffic heads right to my About Author page. You should think about updating your page, especially with a visible RSS feed link.

Very worth it.  I also like how you can combine the opt in with the sharing buttons and make it all in one!

I hate those popup boxes and have unsubscribed to blogs that present them to me more than once.  There should be a cookie or something that prevents me from seeing it again if I've closed it once.

Congrats on Yahoo picking up your article, Joe! These are all great ideas. Over the past few years I've had a few article get a lot of attention and couldn't really figure out how to hold on to those viewers. I'll have to try the opt-in box (but I also hate pop ups so I'm not going there.)
