How do you battle spam?

I was commenting on a blog I frequent and got a message back saying I've been flagged as a spammer!  A lot of spam filters out there -

Some   are too aggressive, some are lax.  Even re-captcha was gamed recently.

What are your spam fighting tools?  What has worked and what hasn't?

I use Akismet and Conditional Captcha together.  For a few days at the beginning of the week (after the updates), I was having some issues.  Now it's all better again.  I like the combo since it combines the power of Akismet and a backup filter of Conditional Captcha for my real readers.  :-)

Funny you should mention that, I use AKISMET right now, but will be looking to add this as I am getting INUNDATED with SPAM comments these days, as I outline in my post:

   http://nothowtodoit.com/2010/1…..t-numbers/

I know it is shameless self promotion, but at least I didn't mention:

   http://nothowtodoit.com/2010/1…..per-traps/

That would have been completely off script!Embarassed

Hope that helps, but if anyone has a silver bullet for this problem, please suggest it!!

MoneyCone,

I use the system that Crystal does, but what YOU have to do is start emailing people you were flagged at who don't have our awesome system.  You have to 'teach' akismet that you aren't spam and the only way to do it is by letting them know via their contact form AND having bloggers pull you from the depths of spam hell

Great point!  My emails usually include "Please rescue me from Akismet, lol" and "Just a suggestion, but Conditional Captcha combined with Akismet has done wonders for me.  :-)".  Or something like that…it's a combination of convincing Akismet to stop marking me as spam and convincing other bloggers to install some sort of backup filter that allows readers like me to "save" their comments before they are eaten.  :-)

I use Typepad spam plugin. So far I never had a proper one go to spam and vice versa. The only problem is by default all pingbacks go as spam. Generally I don't get a lot of spams so it is very easy for me to get the pingbacks out of spam. For some reason, from my computer I never get the proper letters for the captcha, so I comment very less on the blogs with them. That is the reason I don't have captcha in my blog. It is something to do with my computer settings I guess, I just don't know what.

Akismet is working great, but i suspect i will need more tools as the blog gains traction and traffic. the only concern is making it too difficult for folks to comment (too many inputs) as well as accidentally getting them in spam jail.  not a good way to start things off~

how do you combat this? how do you strike the right balance?
