How Do You Choose Opportunity?

Hello Yakezians!  (I'm not sure if we have a word to describe ourselves…this shall suffice for now!)

One of the great things that I'm discovering (and graciously am grateful for!) is that once your blog grows and gains some traction, you begin to get emails from websites and blogs looking for collaboration.  While it's totally great and humbling to have people wanting you to participate in their blog or website via guest post or vlogs, how do you pick and choose what to do (especially when those inquiries for contribution are unpaid?)

My blog and content creation skills are by no means for-hire only (I'm not nearly that cool) but when you're juggling life along with a blog (where you don't want quality to start slipping because you're creating content elsewhere) how do you really know where to spend your time or what opportunities to take?  Do you ever have issues like this?

How do you really know what you're "worth" in terms of content production/blogging, and are there any tricks to knowing when to pass on something?

I hope my questions were clear…these issues are never black and white but kind of a fuzzy gray.

Thanks for your insights fellow bloggers!

In Gratitude,

Shannyn

You pick and choose your spots.

Guest posting on established blogs is unpaid, however, there are benefits to providing a guest post.  For example, you get some back links from an established site.  You also expose your writing and your site to a larger audience.

I am guilty of not guest posting enough.  Hopefully that changes in the future.

I think you have to be careful what offers you accept simply because there are people looking to exploit bloggers and their various talents. If people are asking you to provide something for them, such as a guest post, I say it depends on the site. If it seems to be a real PF site and not a link farm, the worst it can do is send some traffic your way if you're allowed a link in the byline. Now if they're asking for regular contributions instead of a one-time thing, I'd be negotiating some kind of compensation.

If you're getting requests from people wanting to contribute to YOUR site, that's a whole other ballgame. You have to decide what you're comfortable doing. Personally, I don't accept guest posts from anyone except PF bloggers that I know (mostly other Yakezies). If I get a random request, I refer them to my guest post policy. If they still ask me to allow a guest post, I offer them one in exchange for a sponsorship fee. I simply refuse to deal with bloggers I don't know – so many of them are scammers posing as real PF people.

As I said, most of this depends on what you're comfortable doing. If you're getting that feeling like, "Okay, I feel like I should be getting paid for this," go with your gut. The worst they can do is opt out, in which case you are probably better off.

If the site the person will be linking to is a non-personal site, I reply explaining sponsorship fees.  If it's a personal blogger, I almost always accept the guest post.  I only guest post elsewhere when I have time.  You pretty much will need to do a super quick cost-benefit analysis every time you are contacted, lol.

Everyone else has given the same response I would. If the opportunity is to a non personal blog, charge a fee. If not, don't charge a fee. Guest posts are a great way to get the word out about your blog and to build relationships. You can make some great friendships with those whom you guest post for.

I agree with all above – if it's a person with their own blog (in the network or not) i'll give them a chance to guest post.  If not, I'll refer them to my advertising wizard.

Second Jeff's comment. If they are a blogger like me, or you, I take the guest post. If they are a for profit site, I won't do it for free.
