May this is too big of a question, I don't know… I get some search engine love from google, not a lot, but I do get some. My problem is with the subcribers, I see that the SE visitors are not leaving right away, they do stay long enough to read the entire article and a lot of them click on the related posts as well, but they are not returning. May be I suck at writing lol . I am working on improving that part, but I was just wondering if I am missing some kind of a magic trick to make them come back? I am not a fan of the pop up asking the reader to subscribe that blocks the content. Is there any other way?
What am I missing? If the answer is that I just have to improve my writing to make them want to subcribe… you can say that too… I am trying… seriously…
Thanks a lot for the help!!!

Have you tried the "What Would Seth Godin Do" plugin? It's the one I use that puts a box at the bottom of my posts that asks for subscribers to my RSS feed and returning visitors to send in guest posts and questions as well. It's not as annoying as those pop up boxes. I've only used it for a few weeks and have gotten an extra 10-15 subscribers since then.
Good luck,
Crystal

No I have not tried that. I have the wp greet box which is "before" my post, but if I am visiting my website I won't subscribe before I read the content. In BFS it shows "Thank you for being a regular reader…" so I can customize it to show a different message if they come from search engines? That would be great! I will try that. Thanks a ton!

You can set it up differently for people visiting after x many visits. I have a new visitor message for people that have visited 3 times or less and the message you see for anyone after that. :-)

Crystal – Glad to hear you have had some success with that plugin. I have been really thinking of using that plugin as well. Maybe I will give it a try.
Thanks,

Crystal – thanks for sharing that plugin info with us. BTW – I don't recall seeing that on your site…maybe because I'm there so much? :)
Suba – It would be interesting to hear about what impact this plugin has for you, if you do install it.

I only have a few subscribers (16 at the time). But to get those, here's what I did…
1. Put a subscription box on top of the fold (topmost-right part of the page)
2. Put a "subscribe" text after the post, be sure you put a call to action like "subscribe now"
3. Make subscribing to your comments is enabled as well
4. Mention on some of my post that they can subscribe if they want to be updated of future articles, good for series articles.
Hope that helps
Tim

Thanks a lot, everyone. Unfortunately WWSGD plugin didn't work for me(yet!). It has some conflict with some other plugins, I don't know which one yet. I am trying to deactivate some at a time and try, so far I have not succeeded. But once I install and keep it for a couple of months, I will update my results in this post.
@Squirrelers I never "noticed" it until I went looking for it. It sort of blends in with the other stuff below the post. Actually now that I think about it, Crystal, it might be better to put it just below the post and above the related posts? I scroll down to comments as soon as I read the post because I would have already read the related posts anyways. Just a thought. But if it has been working for you, then that is all matters.
@Tim, I don't have the subscribe button on the top right. I think I should move it. I have it on the top but on the left in the header. I will try to move it to the right.
Thanks again everyone! I will let you know how it goes!

The way I understand it, we should focus on SE visitors MORE than regular readers. That's the whole point of getting our sites Search Engine Optimized. It's the SE visitors that tend to click on Ads and links. Regular subsribers are good to have to create a reader-base, but they usually don't convert. They are still valuable but not as valuable as SE visitors, in my opinion. I was told by a pro blogger that our total visitors should account for 50% search engine visits.

Do you see it now that I mentioned it? I also overlook changes on the sites I visit all the time, lol.

I only see the option to put it at the top of my post or at the bottom where it was. Since we are trying to grow our subscribers as much as possible and I rather it not be overlooked as much, I moved it to the top. :-)
Does it look okay? Also, remember to click on it and follow through, lol. ;-)

Crystal, I think it's fine. Maybe you can add links to a couple of your favorite posts or sections there, or to your other websites. Oh, I'm already a subscriber, so I didn't click it

Crystal,
This looks much more noticeable than at the bottom. You could also add twitter/fb if you get any hits from there, I never get any so I didn't put it, but if the user prefers another way to get to your posts than just rss, provide them all :-)
Oh I am already a subscriber so you are not geting any clicks from me ;-)

Make it incredibly easy to subscribe and use a call to action in popular posts from the search engines.

Well… I've read the whole thread, installed the plugin and will see how it works. Great stuff and great advise, Crystal!
But… bare with me, please… I was wondering… how do you know which visitors are SE visitors and which one are your subscribers? How do you distinguish between them? Can you see it somewhere in your stats?

I don't know if there is a textbook way to distinguish them. I look at how many subscribers I have on feedburner about twice a week and just noticed a quick increase when I added the plugin. I can see how many people found me via search engines on Google Analytics. I try not to overanalyze, lol.

I tend to overanalyze things :) only now I have stopped checking my stats so much after getting super busy. I use sitemeter to get visitor by visitor analysis, but it gets very addictive. I can set to ignore my visits as well. People use statcounter as well I suppose. Google analytics give a much better overall pic, but I use sitemeter to drill down if I need.

Regular readers and my commenters keep me going. SE visitors might make me money, I do not know, I am not monetizing my site yet. But if it is not for the regular readers, I won't have anything for the SE visitors. It depends on what motivates people I suppose. For me, I would have stopped after 3 months if it were not for Kris@Everydaytips, Kevin@Investitwisely, Nicole@Nicole&Maggie, Biz of life and a few other commentors… they kept me going and I am greedy for more
Plus another thing is, if you solely depend on google and if they kick you out, you are pretty much done. If you do have a strong visitor base on the other hand, then you can do whatever you want on your blog. I have no idea if adsense pays more than individual ads or the other way around. That might affect the preference too I suppose.
Not saying subscribers are better than SE or the other way around, I personally think it would be good to have both, the more the merrier

I think I am a little obsessed because I like to check my stats everyday! I have an excuse though - I am very new to all of this so I guess it is okay to be obsessed… for now.

I want to answer my own question (not answer, rather update) in case someone else have the same question. This is what has worked for me so far -
1) Don't be stupid I set up the email subscription through feedburner, but didn't set up the confirmation email (apparently I had to check a box which the stupid me didn't, I just installed the plugin and left it at that). Out of 27 unconfirmed subscribers 22 confirmed after I sent out a reminder. This is by far the most effective thing that worked.
2) Have RSS button on the right and above the fold. Have the STANDARD rss button. I had a fancy rss man on the left side on my header. Right and above the fold with standard buttons work the best.
3) The WWSGD plugin didn't work, but the idea was great. So I just added that thank you block to my posts permanently (not via a plugin).
I can't say whether 2 or 3 was more efficient as I have rss/email on both these places, but it works.
And another oddball thing, SE visitors always sign up for email subscriptions, whereas referral traffic is almost always RSS. Don't know why this is or what I can do with this information, but I thought I will put it out there… may be some one know how to use this information to get more subscribers/visitors
