TGIF everyone,

I've been using Feedburner to broadcast new posts to email subscribers, but I'm finally upgrading to Aweber.

My question is how do you manage the email list? There seems to be 2 kind of email lists.

1 – for subscriber who want to read new posts on email

2 – a monthly newsletter and a few exclusive content emails totaling only 2-3 emails/month.

How do you reconcile these two lists?

For Fat Guy, Skinny Wallet I use both. I have a very basic subscribe page on which I try to explain to people what the difference is between the two. I have actually had many people sign up for both!

Khaleef. I like that idea too, but it seems like a lot of thinking for readers. :)

Maybe I'll default the subscribers to the monthly newsletter and then ask them to subscribe for a daily update in the welcome message.

Hey!

I only send exclusive content through my mailing list. I don't send "best of the week or best of the month" email.

I also tried to send an email every two weeks to my investing newsletter subscribers pointing a great articles I've written (with adding a context in the email) and the response has been great (higher opening rate and clicks to open links… and Adsense earning ;-) ).

I've kept my feedburner and those readers are only receiving my post as they go live. I rather put more energy in my newsletter.

good choice by picking up Aweber :-)

Mailchimp is a cheap and easy way to blast out once or twice a month to those that don't want daily/weekly updates.

We are just adding a subscription for those that want blog updates. We have been using exclusive lists that we have managed for a few years, and we only send specific content based on those lists. We have just recently added the option to subscribe specifically to blog updates.

I think the key is to have differentiation. If you have an exclusive list, that is pretty much just you picking the blog entries you want to blast out, then there isn't much differentiation and I think you'll confuse your readers. If you have an exclusive newsletter about investing in real estate, or something like that, then the reader can easily differentiate where they want to sign up, and may sign up for both because they are different.

Here is what we do. Not sure if it will help.

We have specifically placed the "subscribe to blog updates" option on top of the blog (and soon to be on the blog posts as well). We have also added a subscribe to blog check box on the comments section (We are using a mailchimp plugin for this, but there is one for Aweber I think). Then we just have this set up to email every week the latest posts.  They will only see this sign up if they are looking at the blog home page or on a specific post. If they aren't they won't.

Then we have our exclusive sign ups. We are constantly pushing to specific pages to sign up for exclusive, specific topics they might be interested in, and have option to view those pages by clicking icons in the sidebar. These are on all pages.

Not sure if that helps, or even makes sense. Again, I think a lot of it depends on what your exclusive content is. If it's exclusive content on a certain subject, you will be linking to that content throughout posts, possibly put it in the sidebar, etc, and it won't matter if you offer the blog updates on the same page because they are completely separate options, and the viewer will sign up for whichever they are interested in.

I use Aweber (affiliate link if anyone is interested) subscription rules to funnel people through multiple lists. Right now the options are:

1. All Posts

2. Monthly Newsletter

3. Zero Inbox Week e-course

If anyone subscribes to list 1 or 3, they are automatically added to list 2. I am working on a weekly roundup list and another e-course. Both will also funnel into the monthly newsletter.

Hey hey!

I've been playing with Aweber for a while now and it's been a solid choice. I'm echoing what a few people have already mentioned and plan on using my newsletter for a more premium or exclusive content – less of just the recap stuff. At least that's my plan right out of the gate with the newsletter. You should definitely be testing though, your audience might like one, the other or a combination of both. You can use the newsletter as a platform to create the best experience for your readership :)
