If a Tumblr blog links to your site, does Google see this as a site with a PR of 8 linking back to you? If this is true, with Tumblr's ability to reblog, is it beneficial to start a Tumblr blog and then convert it?
I'm curious…
Thanks,

No that would not count as a PR8 link. The main tumblr domain may be PR8, but each blog's subdomain should have its own PR. Subdomains are treated as their own site. I don't know if there would be any benefit to starting a tumblr blog and converting it. I would think it wouldn't help. Most blog hosting networks are designed in such a way that they cannot be easily exploited, otherwise spammers would take over the network.

I have a separate tumblr blog, just to post interesting photos to and create an occasional backlink to my sites.
It caries little traffic and value. PR = 0 and Alexa is 16m or so.
But when you are browsing the web, it is easy to post something interesting that you read to your tumblr blog.

Tumbler is considered a web 2.0 site and yes you would see a benefit from getting a link from a Tumbler or Wordpress.com or Blogger.com, Squidoo, etc.
However, the benefit is small for one link. You would need tons of these sites to see any increase. If you've ever heard of a link wheel, these types of sites are often used in link wheels.

I agree with Modest Money. This way whole market will be spammed and badly. I am glad it is this way.
