I know that there are many here who are "allergic" to debt, but for the rest of you, how many started their blogs in part because they were trying to get out of debt? Just curious.

Me in part. Not necessarily that I started my blog to try to get out of debt, but that being in debt made me obsessed with money issues, which led to me starting my blog.

I was in debt — not morbidly so, but it wasn't a great situation, and I had other problems with money — and I started my blog to keep myself accountable for my financial decisions, after already starting my path to responsibility.

It's really inspiring to see bloggers who start their blogs with a debt payoff theme and then to see them evolve it more towards investing, etc.

I did! My wife and I were digging our way out of debt and I figured my blog would get me a little more income to help cancel it out. Well, the blog really didn't make much money until after we were already out of debt. Now it's helping pay for our house! :)

Being in debt caused me to start reading more about money, then a lot more… then eventually I thought I had something to say about it too and here I am. It's been a huge motivator so I'm very glad I'm here!

I started mine because I adopted a frugal lifestyle related to being in debt….. I don't think i'll ever leave my frugal lifestyle now.

I'm still in debt ($50k left – car/student loans) and started blogging as an accountability tool. It has made a huge difference in my spending and the way I think about money. Things are totally different when I have to report to other people!

Growing up in India, my parents never had credit cards. So if you want to buy something big, you save up for it and pay cash.
This was the mindset I came with when I moved to the US.
But, the story was totally different here. So to educate myself and others to stay out of debt and start saving, I started my blog.

I did not start because of debt, but I was in debt. We paid it off and everything, but I started because I am really frugal and wanted to talk about it.

Like Flexo I started mine to keep accountable, but to avoid getting into debt rather than because I was already in it.

I started my very first pf blog because I realized that I desperately needed to be accountable and learn more about managing money. A month or so into that, I realized that maybe I should get rid of my student loan, so that blog became a little bit debt-focused for a while but that wasn't the original purpose.

I started my blog so I'd have an outlet to talk about how we're getting out of debt. My wife and friends were getting sick of me. :)

I'm an accountant, so the reasoning behind my blog was to dispense real knowledge. I got so tired of reading half-assed articles in the magazines the just listed stuff that had do with finance and taxes, but never bothered to qualify the information or dig deeper into the whys and only left thing at the hows. Plus, it gives me a way to vent about the things I see and hear in my daily life without upsetting clients, particularly when it comes to accountability and responsibility for the situations people may be in.

I started my second blog (Fat Guy, Skinny Wallet) in part because of having over $100k in debt. Of course, it's also dedicated to my weight loss as well.
It's just another way to hold myself accountable and to easily track my progress (besides my spreadsheets).

I started my blog as a way to make money because I didn't have a job. But now I have a job and side income! (still in debt lol but hopefully I will be out sooner because of the extra income.)

I started my blog because I was annoyed with people who jumped on a lady who guest posted on Get Rich Slowly and admitted to hiring a housekeeper and a lawn care dude. I love my biweekly British housekeeper (Jacqui) and my lawn care dude (Ben). So nope, not because of debt. But we did still owe some money on my husband's car (paid off last year) and had (and still have) a mortgage…

Had debt? Have debt. All over debt. I breathe debt. It fluffs my pillows at night and is the cream in my coffee.
