Hii Everyone,
Just wondering if any of you know of how many sites and/or traffic a month a dedicated server can host without any problem. An upper limit would be good to know.
Thx!
Sam

From my limited knowledge, number of sites doesn't really matter – it's a game of pageviews per second/hour, and what the data is.
I think most servers can handle about 1,000 simultaneous visitors if you are serving single pages, or cached websites. If you are downloading videos, it will be substantially less, maybe like 5-10.
If we are talking WordPress blogs, I think you could easily host quiet a few (maybe 10+), as max traffic would most likely be fine.

Sam if you are planning to move over to self hosting, do get capacity planned by experts. I work in an environment where a firm of 3000+ servers (with 500 CPUs in each server) cater for 100M page views/updates per day. Which includes form filling, payment submission, checking statements etc.
Without capacity planned it might happen that one fine afternoon, after being interviewed on a TV channel you find your sites grinding to halt.
Also never go for only one dedicated server, always have n+1 configuration. n number of servers what you should have .
So, if your capacity plan requires you to have only one dedicated server, go for 2.
A decent planner can cost above 1k, but its worth the money if you are going self hosted.

Thanks for your thoughts.
@OneCent @Rob – Does a dedicated server only being able to host 1,000 visitors a day sound right? That can't be that little can it? Or is it 1,000 visitors at any given second?
I upgraded Yakezie.com to a dedicated server because we had 30,000 a day for a couple days at one point, and I figured it was worth paying the extra $100+/month.
thx

Sorry – my estimate for traffic was about simultaneous connections (like all requesting a page at once). But One Cent is right, you need to estimate capacity based on what is being served. If you can serve 1,000 simultaneous connections, you can easily get 100k+ visitors an hour.
If each visitor only is getting a small webpage, like good cached blog, you can host a ton of sites and get a ton of traffic without issue.
If each visitor requires the server to process actions (like payment, scheduling, etc.), or you are serving something intensive, like video, you can't handle anything near as much.

Sam each server has its own configuration. Can you give the details of the yakezie dedicated one?
Num of processors, frequency, RAM make of the server etc? Then only I can answer your question. But again, I am not qualified to estimate how much the server can withstand.

one more thing, just saw that yakezie is on go daddy. You can call their help desk and get an expert to give you free estimate.
By this rate yakezie will double its size in next 6 months and quadruple in one year. Its better to cover bases for 12 months.
So you can ask for capacity quote for current max * 4 = 120000 per day visitors.
you can also think of Amazon cloud, not sure if any big site is hosted on go daddy.

I moved Consumerism Commentary to Amazon EC2… best hosting move I've made since starting off on DreamHost. Not cheap though. With some help, I got rid of apache over the past week or so, and replaced it with a faster http server. There's always a concern of a massive EC2 outage, but at least you have the option of running your site in different regions to reduce that risk… load balancing looks pretty easy, too, if you want to go that route.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys.
So if you have a dedicated server, the problem with that is if your dedicated server goes down, you go down right? Whereas if you have a VPN (?) virtual web server.. you've always got a backup going. Am I getting this right? Sorry for the terminology.
Guess I just want the safest, fastest, least downtime server possible that can handle 50,000 visitors a day kinda stuff. I should just go ask InMotion the specs.
I don't mind paying an extra $100 more a month if I never have to worry.

My $10/month 1and1 is starting to cave a bit, mainly because of the DB size I think. You might be able to pack a whole lot more on a shared server if you run WP in multisite mode because there's just one engine running. Host needs to be able to do wildcard domains, though.
But hey, you're rich, right? You can afford the dedicated, right? ;)

I'm broke, that's why I'm asking! But, for the good of the team, I want to give us the best we can.
I am super impressed it only costs you $10/month for your server! I should probably look into different options.
thx

Sam is rich! This is an interesting topic because I have been wondering how hard it is to move from shared hosting to a dedicated server and the costs involved.
