As many of you know I am a relatively new blogger. I started blogging to become a better writer and force my brain to think creatively….and maybe make a few dollars (to pay for hosting, my domain, and maybe enough left over to buy a beer). However, I've been reading a bunch of posts on this forum where folks comment that they are making money with their blogs. So, I'm curious. How much can be made? How much are you making? When did you start making money? How are you making the money? is it from Adsense? If so, should I be clicking on ads when I visit your site? Do other advertisers find you or do you find them? Something other…?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I'm very curious. If you don't want to post publicly on this forum, please send me an email (email addy below).
Thank you in advance!
Mid Life Miser (aka; Jody)

It's possible to make a full time income, but it takes a lot of work and dedication and you really need to look at like a business rather than a past time. While there are always exceptions to the rule, I find out about 2 years after I start a blog whether to not it is going to be a success financially. The problem is that you still have to put all that time and effort into it without knowing — a reason that I think that people that blog more because they enjoy it end up being more successful at it.
The key to making money for most types of advertising out there is to get traffic to your blog. That is always the challenge, but earnings will usually move in the same direction as traffic. Not sure if that helped at all, but more than happy to answer more specific questions if you have them.

@MLM You might have better luck getting answers to these questions by emailing people directly. Most of us are reluctant to discuss specifics in the public forums because anyone can read the posts.
Edited to add: And apparently I don't read well, because now I see that you said that in the original post. Never mind! :)

Blogging is really low hourly pay, most do it for fun and a few extra bucks. There are some like Buy Like Buffett, and Budgeting in the Fun Stuff who are probably making decent full time income.

Ditto what Barb said. For me anyways, when I add up what I've made and divide it into the number of posts I've written, then look at how long it takes to write a post (not to mention all the other stuff you have to do like set up the site, moderate comments, etc.) it's definitely pennies per hour. But I do it mainly because I love writing and interacting and hopefully helping a person or two along the way.

That is interesting. A lot of sites don't publish earnings but it is nice to see those that do compiled in one place.

NOOOOOOO!!!!
It does no one any favors to click on their ads and certainly don't EVER click on your own.
As for money, blog because you love it. If you can do it for a while, consistently and well, then start to consider it as income. Otherwise you will burn out.
It took me a long time to make anything decent (I'm going on 4+ years now).

Wow, that's pretty sweet that someone compiled those income numbers from all those bloggers.

It all depends on how much you want to put into it. The harder you work, the luckier you get right? I myself can definately say that you CAN make money blogging but it requires dedication and hard work. Just focus on the materials you write and the rest will fall into place. I promise you :D

Neat. I'd slip in at #16 on that list if I were using this month's stats. 12, if I were using October's. 19 with September's.

I have said it before to people on this forum if you are worried about making money 8 posts and 3 weeks deep quit now b/c it is likely you'll burn out way before you ever make anything worthwhile.
Blog because you love it. Blog because it is a hobby that might turn a few bucks DO NOT BLOG THINKING YOU ARE THE NEXT CRYSTAL.

You are absolutely right. Making money blogging takes a long time, in almost all cases. I was more than a year in before I consistently made more than a hundred dollars a month. I've still never seen an adsense check.

Blog your passion or else you will burn out by focusing on money. Check out Pat Flynn – he shares some innovative ideas on making money, with a blog as the foundation.

HAHAHA – Hilarious! I second that – I got into blogging because I wanted to provide a service to my young friends that didn't know anything about finances. Now, I am making some money and having lots of fun doing it.
P.S. I think it's hard to find another Crystal – she works way too much ;) (I know she will read this too)

First, I think it's awesome that we can even say this!
Second, MJTM always says it like no one else. That's the real answer to this question; you really have to do it because you enjoy it, not because you want to make money. Writing for money isn't nearly as fun as writing for fun; it'll show through to your readers, your content will suffer, and so too will your eventual earnings.

Ditto to all of the above!
I do understand the curiosity, though.
