Most bloggers seem to be diversifying into multiple blogs now.
I think this is the way to go – quantity counts too. If I can make a bit from 10 sites, that would be just as well as having 1 bigger site. More diversification is better in my book.
From what I've seen, it seems like additional blogs avoids putting all your eggs in one basket since your metrics could take a dive at a whim depending on how the wind blows!

I definitely am diversifying in order to keep up earnings in case my main site takes a turn… Im just so vested in my main site that I will keep it up no matter what happens to the stats.
There has been a lot of talk on a niche site… I am starting one…but most people seem to want one for the "set it and forget it" approach. I actually want to keep mine actively updated. Especially since this niche site is now about a topic more interesting to me than personal finance, which I didnt think possible a year ago.

Good luck. I think having a personal experience in anything you write about will give you more passion, which hopefully leads to greater success!

What I am wondering about diversification and adding more sites: where in the world do you get time to keep up with all of this? One blog is hands full (for me, at least). Five more? Are you kidding?

Yeah – what's the secret to the multiple blogs? I've ran my one since 2009 – and that alone has been tough to manage at times, haha.
I do hear you guys on the diversification thing – many full timers would probably be destroyed if Google didn't like something on their site. At least multiple blogs would mitigate the risk a bit.

I actually do a hybrid of this and it has worked well for me. What I do is place up a niche site and leave it for a few years. Like I have said, 9 out of 10 will never amount to anything when it comes to generating income. When that one does start to show that there is interest, I sometimes (not always) take it and begin building on it to generate more traffic and income.
This is a way of using my time more wisely by focusing on those that were able to make it on their own.

This is exactly why I chose to focus more on niche sites rather than blogs. I think it's possible to do 3 blogs at a time well, but difficult to do more than that unless you are just a writing machine. This allows for the diversification without the continual time commitment.

Well, one strategy is to do a somewhat reduced posting schedule.
If you currently only have one blog and you're writing five times a week, that's five articles you need to write weekly.
If you start a second blog and do a 3x a week posting schedule on each blog, that's six articles you need, an increase of only one. Adding one article is probably doable for most, or hire a staff writer or solicit guest posts for that 'extra' article.
Beyond that, I would see it as a stretch.

As someone with multiple sites, the key for me has been to really concentrate on my baby. You never want your biggest money-making blog to suck. For the rest of my own sites, I post once a week-ish. For the sites I co-own with Jesse, we hire staff writers.
Altogether I bring in way more than I spend. I think this last month, which has been slow, I've made about $2600 on just blog income from all of my sites combined and I've spent $250-$300 to keep them going…I'll have all of my numbers up tomorrow at BFS and How I Make Money Blogging…

"Can I make enough money to pay for my hosting and domain?"
Yes.
That should be a fairly realistic goal for anyone who puts in some effort. But it might take time to get there though. It may be a few months before you see any revenue. If you stick with it then getting your expenses covered and some bonus beer money is pretty realistic.

It seems like a lot of people are bringing on staff writers now, too. It can be a fairly inexpensive way to generate more content and free up more time for yourself. Managing and writing all the content for 6 blogs is going to be impossible, especially if you have a day job.

Some make money… some don't. I make enough to cover my expenses (including going to FINCON11 – woohoo) and I am very happy about that. For me, blogging is a very part time hobby so the fact that I am even breaking even and got a nice trip to Chicago out of it to attend FINCON is more than I could ever ask for. Blogging is like any venture… the more time, effort, and talent you are willing to put into it, the more you will get out. But as others have said, you won't make anything right away.
And as for Adsense, please do not click on ads on purpose just to be 'helpful.' This can get accounts banned and will make people very unhappy!

If you are asking that question too early on, it will never happen. Blog because you love it. If you love it and stick to it, the money will come over time. You can make a lot on a blog if you do it correctly (see Pat Flynn's blog for an example), however, most will never be as successful. It takes a ton of work and dedication to keep a blog going for the long haul to make a decent income.

My question regarding money was one of simple curiosity. Can I make enough money to pay for my hosting and domain? I still dont know. I have no desire to be a full time blogger. I have a full time job that requires me to travel on a pretty frequent basis (I'm writing this from a hotel room several hundred miles from my home). I have kids. I have a wife. etc…. However, If I can make a few extra $'s a month why not….? I just need to know when, where and how.
Definitely you can make enough money to pay for your hosting and domain. You can probably do that many times over if you stick with it.
I started blogging for some of the same reasons you did (+ wanting to improve my finances) and am still blogging years later. It's fun!
