Hi all,
I think I've seen this question and some answers, but I wanted to throw a twist. Let's say, we all get semi-successful. Our blogs bring in $1000/month. Would you come out of the closet if your income grew ten times? I'm still on the fence, but it just seems the bigger bloggers don't use aliases. The tricky part is that we will never know for sure since we don't have a crystal ball, but just for conversation, if you could name an income level or how many times more than current levels, what would it be?

I will keep my cent mask on till i have a day job to care about. I think mostly this is the reason, bigger blog authors don't care about their bosses and company policies.
We remain anonymous to protect our and companies image. (personal opinion)

I don't know. I started blogging about my income directly on my challenge site. There is still some anonymity, but not much left.

Oooh. I never thought about that. Tricky, the bigger blogs bring in so much income no one can really question them. Since we're starting out, we risk some ridicule or criticism because we don't have the bigger blog wallet to fend off critics?

Who knows, maybe that accessibility makes you more real to your readers so possibly this will bring you more success?

If blogging ever generate more income than the day job then the mask is coming off! hahaha! I doubt it will happen though.
J$ is blogging full time now and he's still keeping his secret identity. I think once you get to a certain point, people don't really question your blog persona anymore.

Haha, that's a good level. More than the day job, guess my mask would be coming off, too! Funny, it seems like a chicken or the egg question. If I get the high income, the mask comes off. But if the mask comes off, perhaps I get to the higher income faster? Might need to follow J$ more closely. Thanks!

J$ came out the closet so to speak a couple of months ago. I think that once they blog full time they don't care. Then they can be interviewed, appear on television, write for others, have speaking engagements, etc.

Thanks for clearing that up. It seems you open yourself up to more opportunities, but you still have to get to a certain level first. No easy answer it seems.

I've always been of the belief that you should be transparent in business, and I kind of viewed my blog as being a business (sort-of) so I always use my real name and make my mug available. In terms of business the theory is that people will feel more comfortable building a relation with a person rather than a company or brand image. My big thing is that I just don't want to seem shady or anything; I see on several blogs people come out of the woodwork to rip others apart and give "advice" when they are asking for help yet they hide behind an avatar, don't give a real name, and no contact information and that makes me very suspicious of them. Plus I think it's pretty cool to show friends and family my face on a website and be like "see, I wasn't lying, it really is me!"

For me it wasn't related to income level. It was about being able to be more open. It sounds counter-intuitive but that's how it worked out for me. I'm really glad I made the switch to just saying who I am.

Hey Eric,
Great point about building a relationship with a person instead of a brand. Glad your friends and family get to share in your website adventures!
Hey Jackie,
Interesting. I'm guessing you're very comfortable in your skin. I'm the opposite. I'm a little more open with my blogging persona. Who knows, maybe one day I'll get to be as comfortable as you are. Good for you!

I still keep an alias and I don't think that will change. I think what matters is what you are about, what you stand for, and what you write about. If people respect that than that is what matters. They don't need to know your real name. Because I work in the public sector of health in a smaller city, it wouldn't take long for me to be discovered which may not be the best idea right now.

I've always used my real name because I've never seen a reason not to. You don't have to be a big blogger to use your real name. There are plenty of small bloggers that use their real name. Just do whatever you are comfortable with.

I don't hide my name too well (my full name is on my eBook that I give away for free on my site), and I certainly don't hide my income. I actually have income reports every month (my new one comes out tomorrow for the month of July). I don't feel like it's affecting my work or that it's conflicting with their policies, but if it does, then I guess I'll have to learn how to raise my online income in a hurry!! :)

I try to keep my monthly income under wraps, but it could probably be estimated based on the prorgress (or not) that I make each month. As for my name, Its not private under the domain registry and I try to keep things semi anon, but I know some know my real name, etc. I'm not going to worry about it though. It is what it is. I'll probably keep doing the same thing – I wont actively hide it, but I wont put it on a flashing banner at the top of my site either.

Both. I work full time for a company, and I have a company on the side that I do stuff with plus the blog, but that's part of my company thing.

I have my name and picture, but after my ebook comes out, my full name will be available. I just wish I had a more common last name, like Smith, because I do worry about my kids' privacy.

I actually work in a financial company and they would definitely frown on a financial blog. I comply with their rules, but still, I enjoy my hobby and would hate to stop…
I guess if blogging was bringing in 2 or 3 times my salary, I might reveal more of my identity. But for now, I'm MR.
Another reasons I don't want to use my real identity is because if my blog gets large enough, I would like to bring in guest posters.
