I have been pretty successful building a following on all of the various social media sites except for Facebook. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Does anyone have any advice for how to build up a Facebook list?

I'm very new to blogging, so don't take my advice as the best out there by any means. But I have a few suggestions:
- Beef up your Facebook page to make it look a little more appealing. Add a cover photo and links to your twitter/RSS feeds (look at my Facebook to get an idea). The links can be added using Facebook apps. Regular updates also help. I try to post something daily.
- Make the Facebook button highly visible on your website. You may also want to get a plugin that displays a pop up with your Facebook like button to new visitors.
- Participate in Rafflecopter giveaways (I see that you are participating in the iPad Mini giveaway from The Debt Myth already). Those can bring tons of likes to your page.
I hope this helps!

I'm not that great on Facebook either, but I think I know what I need to do to improve.
Giveaway is a good way to get followers, but you need to keep them.
- Be interactive and share your life. JD Roth is really great here. His updates are interesting and are conversation starters.
- Post pictures.
- Join groups like FinCon on Facebook so you can interact with other bloggers.

I think Facebook is hard to gain followers on. Usually giveaways work. I've noticed that Canadian Budget Binder has an AWESOME Facebook following where everyone seems very active, so maybe they should give tips :)

Anton,
Can you elaborate more on how to participate in Rafflecopter giveaways?

I agree with Michelle. Mr. CBB has an awesome Facebook following. When I've had success with Facebook, it was because I was committed to the process. Initially I got frustrated because I didn't have the instant feedback that I had with Twitter. I had to consistently post and make sure they were interesting. After a few weeks, I started to see results.
Facebook is less about the hard messages (in my opinion). When I see someone just post piece after piece about their new blog post, I begin to tune out.

I've done the rafflecopter giveaways and those have worked great. I also have done sponsored FB posts and have gotten new followers that way. FB allows you to target people that would be interested in what you have to say. For instance, I targeted people who also like Dave Ramsey, since he is a big personal finance guy and a lot of my content is complementary to his message.

Rafflecopter is a service you can use for free to host any kind of giveaway you want. You can find about giveaways others are having in the Yakezie Reader Giveaways and Promotions thread on this forum (or ask your friends). To participate, you just have to get the giveaway code from the hose and embed it on your website. You usually get to promote one of your social accounts per each giveaway. The more people participate, the more likes/followers/subscribers you are going to get.

I think a more important question is what to do with a Facebook following to both deliver value to them and your site. Outline your goals for Facebook first, then work on growing. (I know a lot of people who just cared about the metric but didn't have a plan and lost engagement)
