That happens quite a bit. If compete don't have enough data on your visit numbers they do not return a value. You just have to get more visitors to your website and eventually compete will pick up on it

I think compete works a lot like Alexa in that they may just not have a very large sample of data to estimate numbers and give your site a rank. Should come with time though.

Yep. Increase the number of visitors and you'll start to see your compete rank. They aren't very accurate, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

If you sign up for a free account and install the code then the Compete ranking will be far more accurate. Do note that it only counts visits to the homepage, which is still misleading as most of your visitors probably RSS/search into the site and don't navigate to home.

I think Compete automatically detects your numbers once you have enough site traffic to register.

I might try the code installation. I've had my blog for almost three years now and have decent traffic, yet my complete rank is in the pits. Kind of annoying.

Why it matters: It doesn't other than that it's used as part of the PF blogosphere ranking lists. That's why I bothered to put the code on my site, and for no other reason.

Compete is much the same as Alexa. I find both of them inaccurate and tend to check both of the numbers. They attempt to estimate traffic numbers from websites mainly using toolbar data.
Alexa is more generally used and some advertisers use that number, but the amount of visitors you actually get to your blog is far more important.

As other said, compete works the same way as Alexa. But there is no way to influence it like with a toolbar. They have a sample audience and they extrapolate the traffic.
And installing the code won't influence the ranking. The code is ONLY to collect the demographics of your visitors. It seems stupid to collect the demographics and not use the data to influence the compete score, but that is how it works. Don't take my word for it http://www.compete.com/help/q225
Advertisers might be interested in knowing your demographics, so for that purpose, you can install the code. But to improve the score, you just have to give it time.
