How to get freelancing gigs

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm still new to the forum and haven't learned how to navigate it completely yet.

Anyway, I've been lucky enough to find a few freelance writing gigs in the past few months that have brought in some good income, but I'm looking to continue to build my clientele to the point where I can do that full-time. For those who have or have had consistent freelancing jobs, what have you done to get them? And secondly, how did you lasso the best gig you have?

I've seen the stuff on Elance, Problogger.net et al., but I'm looking for some different and creative approaches. Thanks all! :)

This forum is pretty good!  Many have launched their freelancing gigs from here!

Build your brand and be patient.

1. Connect with others on linked in and G+ and twitter

2. Build your portfolio and create a page on your site to showcase your work

3. Do guest posts. Many bloggers will accept a guest post and later hire.

4. Keep your eyes out for offers.

5. Post your availability on various job boards-problogger has one, yakezie has a thread as well.

Best of luc!

I freelance full-time, making a lot more than I did at my 9-5 job.  I started by writing (a lot) for free in an effort to get picked up by big publications.  I got a few "big" writing jobs simply by writing for free at first and bugging people sometimes.  Here is a post I wrote on the topic but apparently can't post the link here for some reason.  Just google- club thrifty how to get freelance writing jobs!

I've actually had that post you wrote bookmarked since September :) I go back and read it every now and then. Thanks to the rest of you, too, for your ideas!

You already got some excellent tips. I'm with Barbra on the need to get yourself a decent portfolio. You can do some serious link building on it and promote it even on the freelancing sites. In my view elance and other similar platforms are great to get you started, the main focus should be to drive business to your own site little by little.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm looking for writer jobs too, as a supplement to my day job. Holly, I'm looking up your article for advice :)
