After noticing a lot of traffic to one particular post, I noticed I rank very high for a well searched term, I was wondering, in order to keep that sort of ranking does the post need updating or linking to keep it in place, or as long as people visit will it remain/reinforce its authoritative position?  Currently I am #5 listing after 4 posts from the Financial companies site, and ahead of sites like Forbes, Mr Money Moustache, GetRichSlowly etc.

How do I keep that position for that post, is it just hoping and praying or can I cement it?

Cheers,

Matt

Its a difficult one really Matt. If you change things then it might upset whatever reason you are ranked well and you could go down the rankings. Of course you could go up as well. It's whether you want to gamble. If it is a really great post then hopefully it should maintain its place naturally. I would just personally keep my eye on it and if I saw it alipping then maybe start doing things to promote it or improve it.

Today I looked at it and I had lost Authorship, I checked using the http://www.google.com/webmaste…..chsnippets and I had two problems appear, first was 2 rel-author lines, second was a problematic URL within one of them.

Therefore I went in and fixed the problem, now it is still not showing my face, but the Authorship checker confirms it is valid, so hopefully it will again soon.

I really think that was making a big difference to see my face next to the post on page 1 of results..

At that point I thought, in for a penny,  in for a pound and I edited the post, fixed a typo or two, and added internal links on related matters to keep the reader on the site.

I'll let you know how it turns out for future reference, but won't know for sure if it would be the authorship change or the content change that affects the result.
