I use Akismet, but I also use Conditional Captcha.  It helps catch the legit comments that Akismet puts in spam jail.

+10 points for this guy! Anyone using Conditional Captcha brightens up my day! :)

My latest pet peeve – having the "subscribe to comments via email" box automatically checked. Then having no way to unsubscribe from the stupid thread, so I get emails for days.

This one is probably top three on my list.

I also hate when you're in the middle of typing a comment and you get a pop-over.  It's not in a new window but it seriously pisses me off.  I have actually inserted text in the middle of my comment to indicate my displeasure along the lines of: "Here's the point I'd like to make about your…WOAH, I just got interrupted from typing my comment by a box that appeared, not cool…article."  Typically I'm pretty well done commenting on that site afterward.

I'm not sure which commenting system it is, but after you enter all of your details and think you have commented, you are sent an email that you have to confirm your subscription.  Ughh.

I, too, cannot stand the automatic subscribe to follow up comments. Drives me nuts. Same with waiting days to see my comment leave the state of moderation.

I'm pretty sure I don't do any of this but I didn't know about Conditional CAPTCHA. I just added the plug-in to avoid putting anyone in comment jail.

I have GASP but I still have Askimet with Conditional Captcha too since I was getting too much spam with GASP alone.  Even with all three I sometimes get too much spam in a day to be able to go through all the spam comments to see if there are any actual comments on there.

I do have my email address on my blog at least.

Disqus/Akismet here (Akismet flags me as a spammer, so I suppose I'm a hypocrite?)… and I always get stuck in moderation hell.  On some sites I'll complete a Conditional Captcha just to see 'This comment is awaiting moderation'.

I mean, c'mon Akismet.  Maybe someone, somewhere marked my comment as spam, but the truth is I've had 100s on non-spam comments… give me some credit for the ratio!

I use GASP + Bad Behaviour.  I haven't had a spam comment that wasn't manually entered by some person in 6 months or so.  No one gets lost in ASKIMET void and no one has to type in some word/number when all they want to do is click "submit" (so they click 2 times with the check box then submit).

I agree with the original poster, but I'm afraid I'm an offender as someone who runs Akismet and has a place for people to confirm they are real, and it still gets flagged.

I have some very aggressive spammers so anything Akismet flags has to get approval to keep the bad stuff out. I do, however, have a contact form and approve real comments very quickly.

I do something similar and I don't seem to get too much spam. Just a couple clicks and you are done on my site.

My comments have picked up in number since I moved from Blogger to WordPress, so I'm hoping that I have a good setup.  I have it set to require moderation the first time you leave a comment, but once I approve it, no moderation is required on future posts.  I try to get to them for approval very quickly, though the weekends and holidays sometime put me a little behind where I'd like.

I agree with the poster, but I have the set up – thanks for all the tips on other ways to do things.  I find I get less spam comments, but askimet still tosses people into the pending folder – but I bail them out as soon as I notice.

Unfortunately, when it comes to comment systems, none of them are perfect.  I hate the traditional one because if you are at work you can't have your browser remember the details and have to keep retyping on each blog.  Disqus and Livefyre are nice because you can just link any social account and if you are signed into them, it's easy to sign into the comment system and also you are recognized on all site that run the particular system.  Plus, it's so much nicer when you ca have nested responses and can respond to each comment directly without having to @ each person on one long comment.

I've been made aware that my social share bar screws up the reading experience when viewed on an iPad (which I'm looking into) so please don't out me on that one Cool

Oh, and speaking of comment purgatory, I just realized that I was sent to pending on my own blog!  I wonder if that's some sort of sign?

Can someone elaborate on the problems with Akismet?

I just installed it and haven't had a chance to see if it works. Tired of waking up to 30-40 spam comments.

I generally approve comments very quickly and my site should be set up to avoid moderation altogether if I have approved a comment from you in the past.

As a semi-newbie, I would also like to know why Akismet is bad? I haven't had any problems with it…What would you recommend instead? I HATE typing in captchas with my comment. Especially if I don't get it right the first time, and then have to re-type a new one!

I am loving this rant! But I did have to scurry back to my blog to make sure the box next to "Subscribe to Comments" wasn't automatically checked. PHEW! Laugh

1) Run Akismet on your blog

2) Don't even put up a contact form or some other way I can reach you once I invariably get tossed in your spam, and never check your spam folder.

For bonus points, have a plugin like that checkbox that says "I am not a spammer", but don't disable Akismet.

Sorry for the rant guys. ;) In the interests of humane comment policies, please ensure there is a way for your commentators to reach you, especially if you run a ham-crazy plugin like Akismet.

Thanks! :)

LoL I know this is semi-directed towards me!  I un-spammed your comments on Smart Wealth and ditched Akismet.  I honestly never changed it from the guy who owned the blog before me…I spent this weekend updating all the plugins and getting rid of the crap that was on there.

Welcome, fellow Akismet spam hell inmate! :)

I've had and I still have the *exact* same problem as you. It's a flaw in Akismet, and the number one reason why I recommend everyone to stop using it (or at least install Conditional Captcha).

Check out this post if you haven't already ;) : http://www.investitwisely.com/…..t-do-i-do/

P.S. Yes it does make you a bit of a hypocrite, unless you also add Conditional Captcha ;)

Yep things work pretty well on your site. The only thing you *might* want to be careful of is if bad behavior is on your contact form as well. I have seen it being overly aggressive.
