Disqus/Akismet here (Akismet flags me as a spammer, so I suppose I'm a hypocrite?)… and I always get stuck in moderation hell.  On some sites I'll complete a Conditional Captcha just to see 'This comment is awaiting moderation'.

I mean, c'mon Akismet.  Maybe someone, somewhere marked my comment as spam, but the truth is I've had 100s on non-spam comments… give me some credit for the ratio!

Welcome, fellow Akismet spam hell inmate! :)

I've had and I still have the *exact* same problem as you. It's a flaw in Akismet, and the number one reason why I recommend everyone to stop using it (or at least install Conditional Captcha).

Check out this post if you haven't already ;) : http://www.investitwisely.com/…..t-do-i-do/

P.S. Yes it does make you a bit of a hypocrite, unless you also add Conditional Captcha ;)

You can conditional captcha Disqus?  This demands further Googling!

I think my spamminess is my 5 letter, no vowel domain (I know, I know… 'y' is sometimes a vowel!) which someone must have marked as spam once.  I guess I dug my own grave on this one, haha.

I use GASP + Bad Behaviour.  I haven't had a spam comment that wasn't manually entered by some person in 6 months or so.  No one gets lost in ASKIMET void and no one has to type in some word/number when all they want to do is click "submit" (so they click 2 times with the check box then submit).

I have GASP but I still have Askimet with Conditional Captcha too since I was getting too much spam with GASP alone.  Even with all three I sometimes get too much spam in a day to be able to go through all the spam comments to see if there are any actual comments on there.

I do have my email address on my blog at least.

I just installed Bad Behavior and deactivated Askimet and Condition Captcha.  We'll see if the GASP + Bad Behavior combination works for me.

How about otherwise "legitimate" bloggers who basically leave comment spam just using their blog name and a link back to their blog.

Like seriously, you just commented "keep them coming," that's your great contribution to the community.

Ugh, okay, that felt good…

Or bloggers who continuously beg for comments, tell the readers how important comments are to them, but never bother commenting on anybody elses site.

Let me know.  It seems fine for me – aside from actual human spammers, but those are impossible to stop w/o blocking their IP.

Blocking IP manually is like using a sledgehammer to drive a nail into the wall. You'll end up creating a huge hole at the same time. The nature of dynamic IPs and such is that legit people will end up getting banned, and besides, smart spammers will use proxies and other ways of skirting around that. ;)

I think as a short-term solution though, if you are under attack, IP block may be a way to go.

I think I instinctively ignore this type of wording…like I ignore disclaimers.

With GASP and Bad Behavior I haven't had any spam the last two days.  Before I was getting about 30 spams a day with Askimet with Conditional Captcha plus GASP so the new combination is a big improvement. I hope it continues to work.

I get no spam.  Really, the only "spam" I get is when folks leave a URL in the comment – but I flag that on purpose and filter it to spam.  I realized yesterday that I had a "spam" comment – a legit comment – but I hadn't bothered to look at the "spam" link in comments since we get so few.

I think GASP and Bad Behaviour combined is awesome.  Keep us updated TFM!  If we both get the same results perhaps others will listen to my ramblings haha

Glad to hear that this combination is working out for you guys. Anything to reduce the false positive rate and catch the real spammers. :)

Wow. Quite the discussion going.  I installed the Comment Notifier plugin and haven't been able to figure out how to set up the manage subscription option for subscribed readers to have the option to unsubscribe by clicking a link in the email. Any tips for doing this?  Thanks in advance.  And if anyone wants to be unsubscribed to any post on my site, please send me an email to let me know and I can unsubscribe you on the backend at this point.

I have no idea with that plugin, but I use "Subscribe to Comments Reloaded" which does allow one to unsubscribe.
