Hi Yakezie,
Irene is swirling her way towards us here in Virginia Beach. I think we're ready. We shouldn't experience more than strong winds, and heavy rain.
Here's my checklist. Please let me know if I have missed anything, and I'll see you on the other side!

Good luck up there Hunter. Down here in S FL we are just having some decent gusts and sporadic downpours.

Thanks Forest, Eric. It looks like we're in for a direct hit as they keep revising the path westward. The suburb to our east has been evacuated. We'll make a decision on whether to evac tomorrow.

Hunter, I didn't see your post when I posted mine. Stay safe. For your sake (and for that of eastern NC) I am praying this monster has a change of heart and starts tracking east again. Check in once the storm passes and let us know you are safe.

Best of luck Hunter! A few hours west here on I-64, there are some warnings of severe t-storms, but hopefully, not too much more.

Stay safe Hunter! I've been through the eye of a storm once. It's so weird how it gets so calm and sunny in the eye and then it goes back to stormy again after it passes. Hang in there

Hunter, the latest projections show the storm starting to track slightly to the east – much better for you than the westward path it was heading in yesterday. I would love to see it take a sudden eastward turn and avoid you all together. If the storm does hit your town, please keep us informed on ways we can help in the aftermath.

Everyone stay safe, agreed. Always best to be safe rather than sorry, and follow evacuation orders. It's events like this which make me wonder why some people choose to live right on the waterfront. There are real risks involved, particularly in hurricane-prone areas….yet those properties are often the most expensive.
All the best to everyone!

Thanks everyone. My wife happens to be a Navy meteorologist and diststaer preparedness planner…I'm in good hands! The worst of it will begin in about 24 hours. I hope everyone stays safe too.
@ Denise – your hurricane article is great, very timely. Don't worry about duplicating a subject. There are so many of us blogging about different aspects of personal finance that there is always going to be some overlap. I think it great to read different perspectives on the same topic.

Thanks, Hunter. Last I saw was Irene was just downgraded to a Cat2… maybe she will loose some more steam before she gets to VA. By the way, I think your wife's job sounds very cool.

Hopefully it'll be moving pretty quickly. I saw that most of the coast visitors have left, and everyone I know in NYC is posting constant updates on FB.
You're right Hunter, you're in very good hands, kind of an unfair advantage, huh?

Yeah, it's a strange thing to have to deal with a full-on hurricane or tropical storm. We're just outside NYC and technically in an evacuation area. We're going to finalize our plans soon, whether to stay or go.
Stay safe everyone!

Hey Hunter, it sounds like your wife has you covered!
We're still waiting to see how bad it hits us in New Jersey.

Starting to get really bad now. The eye is 1/2 hour away. No power. Thankfully, no damage or injury. Holding on.

Oh wow! I know it must be tough with no power. Of course, not dealing with injuries is the best outcome, no matter what happens to the power or anything else.
We are already getting tornadoes up here, and people are losing power! I can't believe how huge this storm is. It's affecting at least 10 states (and DC) at the same time!!!
