I have only been blogging for four months (but do have 140+ posts), but with the new house and things intensifying at work, I feel my work output and results have plateaud (sp?). Sedo appraises the value of the site at $1,000-$2,000 but I think that must be high because I have never really monetized it. I may not ultimately sell it, but if I could find the right price and more importantly the right home for our site, I would be more than happy to let it go. Some stats are: 4,000-5,000 visitors per month on average, visitors stay 3+ minutes per visit, Alexa Ranking of 119,023, 170+ feedburner subscribers. Email me at webhost@brokeprofessionals.com if anyone is interested. I am going to wait until the end of friday and see if I have a sufficient offer, otherwise I will accept that the site is not ripe for sale and continue on, to either sell later or continue developing it. Thank you.

I'd take a step back, breathe and come up with a more realistic plan. You two post long in depth posts seemingly daily and that is likely too much. Reduce to 2 a week – even 1 a week for a bit and then determine if you can amp up to 2 or 3. 5-7 is a ton IMO.

I tend to agree with Sustainable PF. You've done a lot in a short period of time, and perhaps your current posting schedule has helped. However, is it too intense to be a regular frequency? People can get burned out easily, even with far fewer posts than daily.
How about 3 posts per week (or even less as Sustainble PF suggests), and then see what happens? You've gotten off to a great start, so selling for $1k or $2k seems like you're throwing away something with potential. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys, but I feel like the problem isn't so much writing (which I really enjoy) but rather everything else that goes along with blogging. If I could get $1,000 from a decent buyer I would sell immediately and I don't think I would ever look back. I don't suspect I will even get an offer that high, however.

There is no rule you have to comment elsewhere, hang out @ Yakezie, tweet, facebook or anything BUT write. While all these things "help" (help what?) every time I read "rules of success" the writing is always king. Do what you are passionate about first and foremost. Just my $0.02.

I wouldn't sell either. The great thing about a blog is that the main cost of it is your time. Just let it sit idle, get the traffic from search engine people coming to visit your blog, and when you have more time, you can come back to it! I took a similar break from Sept-Dec of last year, and came back a lot stronger after it.

Another reason that I would not sell is because you can come back and make $1000 per month….

Sorry to keep commenting, but another thing you can do is hire Crystal from Budgeting in the Fun Stuff to run your blog for you!!!! :)

I think I would rather take the bird in hand for the $1,000.00. If selling my blog for $1,000.00 was such a bad idea I would think I would already have offers for it, lol.

BP,
I really enjoyed your blog. It sounds like you've made up your mind. So interesting dilemma. You would sell for $1000, but if you don't get that, will you just halfheartedly continue to put oil in the machine? I agree with the others about stepping back, asking for help, and lowering your post output. Regardless, will support you anyway you decide. The bottom line is what makes you happy. Hope you do continue writing in some form. You are a great writer.

Buck,
Not sure what I would do but I know I can't do this at less than 100%. That is why I am thinking about selling in the first place. It's not burn out, so much as a strong desire to work more on my job. I also would like more time to work on my latest novel idea (I have written unsuccessful, read unpublished novels before). Couple that with increased housework and it is clear that selling the blog might free up more time for me to work on other pursuits.

Would you keep blogging if you could monetize it?

i think if you started to monetize your site a bit more you could easily be making some good income from it – even if you just let it sit. Having 140+ pre-written posts ready to monetize and maximize would be awesome. It can take a lot of time to build up that much content! Unfortunately i don't have the time right now to do it, otherwise i might buy your site. I'll be you could find a buyer at that price though. that'sactually pretty affordable for a site with that much content.

I think if I knew/was comfortable with monetization I would be better able to justify the time I put into it. Perhaps I should be looking for a partner where my wife and I do the writing and someone else takes care of the monetization. We have a lot of feedburner subscribers for a newer site (imo) but no Google Pagerank, although Moz was over four I believe when I checked a while back.

We have 173 posts but 90 or so are our "tips". Writing so often means less time to "monetize and maximize", not that we know how to do so even if we had the time.
I think the challenge for the BPs is that they are passionate about their topic as it applies to them directly. It would take a specific person or persons to be able to follow up their content with similar drive and personal knowledge.

I could be wrong, but I would think 4000-5000 monthly visitors would translate to around $100 a month in Adsense. But maybe I'm overestimating.
You mentioned you don't enjoy the non-writing related work that blogging requires. You can always take it down a notch. Take a little more time to answer email, etc. Or you could hire a VA to do the repetitive tasks – submitting to carnivals, answering emails, moderating comments.
I would hold on off selling. You have an asset and I think it's worth more than $1,000.

Financial Student,
Thanks for the encouraging words, but I think my site has mostly "regular" readers who do not click on adsense at a high rate. That said, I have not optimized my site at all for that kind of thing. I have problems seeing my site as an asset considering how it has cost me hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours of time. It seems more like a failed business then an asset, although perhaps I am being too impatient. Money and time is tight for us right now with the house and all, and my day job as a lawyer is only getting busier. I think in the right hands the site could be an asset and like I said, we love writing, but things are getting tight.
Thanks again for the encouraging words.

Instead of selling, why not consider sitting on the site for a while and hiring someone to take care of the SEO/etc…? search engine traffic really starts to build up when coming closer to a year and you could have something that returns you a couple hundred a month if not more without having to put too much additional effort into it. So, I pretty much second what everyone else has been saying :)
