For my site, I don't do anything special to try to increase my rank with keywords in search. (There are some people who do try to improve it, but I'd say it's about 50/50 who say use strategies versus just 'write good content').
However, I want to share with you my keyword that ranks #1 in Google. It's a real coup to write an article that covers a hot topic that gets traffic as well as a high ranking.
My topic is 'gold investing' and my keyword is 'invest gold rolex' (plus other variants).
What keywords have you cornered with your site?

Congrats! For some strange reason, I have started ranking either 1 or 2 in Google for "fidelity apple gift card." It's crazy because I've been getting about 200 hits or so per day from that position alone. Let's hope it stays! haha

That's too funny! I've had some bizarre ones like "gift resolutions" but nothing like drew in traffic like that!

It's the oddest thing but I started ranking for "Adrienne Maloof divorce" the other day-shortly after I posted about Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I get a lot of traffic for that search term. So much Ive decided to start writing about each of the Real Housewives franchises.

LOL, awesome! Congrats Rolex Gold baller!
I have oddly enough never checked in the past 2.5 years. Hence, I guess I subscribe to the just write stuff strategy.
Is there a tool to input your site and have it spit out all keywords you rank highly for?

Samurai – Install the stats counter plug in and it will tell you.
I rank 1 for Smarty Pig and frugal halloween costumes also. There's a couple others that have popped up too.
This brings up a question, which I shall a post seperately so as not to hijack this.

I am so depressed now. I rank in top 5 (through scroogle) in 4 search terms, I even rank #1 in "credit sesame review", still I don't get 200 visitors from all searches combined..
What's the next best gift card? or the gold watch?

I rank pretty high for "pay off debts fast", but that is not by accident. The CPC is something like $11, so I've been working to get to the top of the leaderboard. I think I'm #1 or #2 right now! Hope it stays!

I rank #3 for "slow carb diet", which has 12,100 global monthly searches. It's got a bunch of Amazon affiliate links in it that do pretty well.

What tools do you guys use to determine the best keywords when you write out your articles?

I dont really check rank, though I do have a pretty high rank for "Plastic bag" and "Plastic bags" from a rant about them I wrote around 2 years ago.

I don't, generally. If a page starts getting a bunch of traffic, I'll use the google keyword tool to find out what keywords could be doing better and make some changes.

I will often just look at what is generating search traffic, and if something is hitting regularly that I haven't written about in a while, I'll drop another article or follow-up.

I think Google Analytics just tells you what keywords people typed in to land on a specific page. To find all the keywords you rank for, you can use Google Webmaster tools to find the keywords, and then use a "rank checker plugin' for firefox/chrome to find out the ranks.
Of, there's a tool called Ginzametrics (kinda expensive) that you can use to track all your keyword rankings.

I always find these so funny. What really amazes me is when people find your blog with something so obscure that how your site came up in the first place is a mystery.
