I may be out of the running. My sites went down yesterday and STILL aren't up. Admins have been unresponsive, also it is down that the host is having a dispute with the datacenter and it is unknown if they are getting shut down. If that happened, my data is gone. I have up to date backups of If You Can Read, but apparently I never turned on the automatic download feature for Edward Antrobus database backups. I do have a recent backup of the actual files for EA and of the custom theme for If You Can Read, but absolutely nothing for SEAM Publishing.
So it's possible that the only site I can recover is the one I've been the least interested in lately. I may be out of the running for Yakezie.

I'm looking for editors, beta-readers, and some demographic research for my upcoming novel, Once Upon a Saturn Moon. If you like reading soft sci-fi thrillers, maybe with a touch of romance thrown in, you can find more information at http://seampublishing.com/once…..aturn-moon

That sounds like some pretty scary stuff! If I were you, I would do everything possible to stay in this challenge though. If you need any help, I know there are a ton of people here that would love to assist you in any way they can. Good luck!

I would have liked to offer some advice but unfortunately can only offer moral support. Will ask my techie hubby to have a look at you post though and see whether he could suggest something.

Wow Edward, that is terrible! I really hope you don't have to drop out. I wish I could offer up some advice but there is little I'm more ignorant about than this type of stuff.
Good luck sir!

I know it's a little late, but I use Code Garage (aff link) to keep my sites backed up. They do daily backups, keep 30 days of history, can assist in restoring your site and will even monitor for malware and site uptime. The owner (Peter) is a great guy and I can't recommend the service highly enough. They have a 7 day trial and backups, scanning and monitoring for 2 sites is just $10 a month. After having been hacked and having lost data thanks to a crappy host in the past they let me sleep at night.

Sorry to hear the bad news Edward. I've dealt with potentially losing a website before and it is so frustrating. I guess this is a reminder to use a reliable web host and always backup your work.
Hopefully you can use this hiccup as motivation to come back even stronger. Although you may have lost a lot of work, you gained valuable blogging experience. I'm sure you'd be able to build everything back up even quicker this time.
Good luck!

Sorry to hear about the hosting problems Edward. If you head over to google and view the cache for each post, you could at least copy all the content and rebuild the site? Not an easy job if you have a lot of posts, but I think your site was newer so it might not be too bad?
For example, this search… http://webcache.googleusercont…..nd-adsense

Also, if you look at the Way Back Machine you should be able to get quite a bit of your content back. This site archives all sites on the web. I know you'll probably be feeling a bit sick right now, but hang in there Edward as all is probably not lost.

Were you hacked? Because I was hacked and my sites were ALL DOWN. NOT FUN. I did recover though. What you need to do is log into you cPanel and take a look at a couple of your PHP files to look for inserted codes. When you get them out you'll come back.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. If I do wind up dropping out of the challenge, I will probably wind up joining again in the future.
The host did confirm today that the datacenter they are using shut them down. They said something about working to try to get the datacenter to turn them back on, but I don't know if the data will still be there if they do.
MoneyInfant, Thanks for the link. I had automated backups in place, but apparently they don't do much good if you don't download them. :) That may just be worth the money.
Tom, that is a good idea, and I did think of it today at work. How long would those cache's exist? All that copying and pasting from a laptop while at the library is going to be… interesting.
Jon, Unfortunately, the Wayback Machine hasn't archived my site yet.
Sandy, not hacked. The entire hosting service I use got shut off by their datacenter. So no CPanel. :(

I used to have the automated backups as well, but like you said it doesn't help if you don't download them. That's what made me decide to just outsource it.

Edward,
I am guessing that you have spoken to the hosting company about signing over the data to you? Then you could possibly try contacting the datacenter directly, explain the situation and see if there is anything that could be resolved… It might take a minute to get everything sorted out and that you are the "owner" of those site just trying to recover his data and hard work from a hosting company with bad business practices…

I agree with what YSMM has proposed–I can't wrap my head around the fact that everything would be lost if it's not a result of hacking and you're the owner of the content. I'm so sorry that you're going through this!!

Indeed, this is really a matter of concern, both for your site which is down and you're unsure about your data and for the challenge. Don't worry, first look into the fact that you site keeps running, ask your hosting company to help your transfer your server immediately without having any downtime. If all goes well, I guess you will still be in the context. Good luck to you.
