In hopes of making my dream of helping others with personal finance for a living a reality, I've been working on a new project. Many of you here have discussed the idea of creating your own products for your site. This is what I've been trying to do.

I understand that college students/young professionals are not too crazy about paying for online financial products. This is why I have decided to gear this at parents. I'm working on putting together a guide for parents that want to help their college aged kids get better with managing their money. I'm at 10,000 words so far. Topics include: tactics to help them save money, rules for parents when it comes to money talk, ways to help them find work, dealing with credit card debt, etc.

I wanted to reach out to you guys as I know that this is a very intelligent and diverse bunch: what do you think about this idea? What would you add?

Thanks a bunch in advance for even reading this Laugh

My thoughts–I love the idea and I think it would sell, but my concern would be the delivery method. You're limiting yourself to tech-savvy parents in their (at least) 40's and 50's who might not be comfortable with an eBook (I'm assuming that's your intent). Self-publish to Kindle or hard print, perhaps? Good luck!

I would have parents teach kids about the dangers of cash advances on credit cards.  Interest accrues immediately and is never a low %.

Yes, a lesson learned (now) many years ago …

MD – you just took the idea right off my brain. just last week i was contemplating the same.  i love the idea.  highly scalable as well in my opinion (think aps, mobile sites, broader implications).  as the younger generation become parents, they will certainly appreciate the platform you are contemplating.  i currently have 15 or so ebooks that have been selling well over the years, a couple audio download products (yet to create a video).  as of late i have been contemplating a software/app but have not put anything into practice as yet.  i am always looking for motivated individuals to work with.  if you are ever considering partnering up, let me know. i can offer my CPA, CFP and CFA credentials.  buyers of financial products are always a bit more comfortable when they see the credentials behind the product.

I think the thing most missing in personal finance is an explanation for student loans, grants, etc., especially when it comes to repayment terms and the cost of each.

I love the idea as well… but I almost think it should be geared for younger children.

1.) Because you will have younger tech saavy parents in this group, more likely to buy your product.

2.) Because this should start with children at a younger age… even if its middle or high school.

Great idea any way you decide to roll with it!

Thanks so much for the great ideas guys.

@Wojo I actually just began talks with someone to self-publish it. I'm excited about this possibility.

@SustainablePF I'm working on a bonus chapter on credit cards that the parents can hand over to their kids.

@Sunil I will email you tonight.

@JT I agree. There's a lot of information missing as it pertains to basics of debt with college students. Paying back loans is usually the harsh reality of starting in the workforce.

@MITR Hmm you really got me thinking. Thanks for the feedback.

If you'll be marketing to parents whose kids have not yet entered college, you could include information about filling out the FAFSA in it. That could maybe be a launching point for discussing finances, etc.
