Hey guys! As I wrote my latest post (Is it possible to beat the market?), I realized something.
I don't have a disclaimer page.
For some blogs, this probably doesn't matter. As an investment blog, I immediately asked myself "What the hell was I thinking by not doing that?"
So, I need some help.
What's going to be the best way to come up with a disclaimer? Did any of you hire professionals (i.e. securities lawyer, etc.) to do so? Copy from someone else? <–(not a fan of this idea) Find some examples online and throw something together?
I would love your feedback!

How about:
"Don't do what I say. I'm an idiot, and I might've even been drunk when I wrote this."
Note: This isn't aimed at you. This is just a blanket disclaimer.

Pure genius. I've always been a fan of "write drunk; edit sober" – so, there is some truth there.

@Corey LOL
What I did was read the disclaimers of a bunch of sites. Found some thorough and boring ones then emailed the site owners if they minded if I copied it. All 3 said sure, and noted they had copied the wording themselves.

Simon, I copied too. Mailed the owner and never got response, assumed silence as agreement and went ahead…

No need to plagiarize, dudes! I went through this process with lenagott.com and actually wrote a post about generating disclosure policies.
Over the course of starting several sites, I did it a little differently each time. Feel free to take what you like from my examples (they are original, so you won't be stealing a stolen one). LOL
Disclosure policy on lenagott.com – only covers affiliates since I don't really offer financial advice on this blog
Disclosure policy on WhatMommyDoes – tried to cover it all formally and informally and added a financial advice caveat
Taxes and Stuff – Because I am a CPA, I felt I had to be crystal clear on this one, so I first included a note at the bottom of my bio AND also have a separate disclaimers page regarding affiliate relationships and tax advice.

You guys are seriously awesome, thanks so much! I may or may not, but definitely already have visited every website I could think of, copied and pasted all their disclaimers onto a single document, printed that document out, and picked out good parts that I liked. So, I think I'll probably do a hybrid of mailing owners and making my own via Lena's ideas and recommendations.

I can't imagine someone getting huffy about the wording on their disclaimer page getting moved over. I just can't envision someone ever saying "Wow, that disclaimer I wrote is epic!"
Just make sure, whatever you do, you feel you're covered.

Actually, mine (above) *is* epic. But you're welcome to use it if you wish. :-)

My disclaimer is very basic and along the lines if what was mentioned above in terms of being unqualified opinion.
My privacy policy was ripped directly from a site that explicitly stated that you were free to use their policy statement for your own site.

I read this post by Andrea over at Curiosity Killed the Blog and realized that I needed some legal statements. In that post she links to websites that help you automatically generate a disclosure statement, disclaimer statement, and a privacy policy. It didn't take long to get those generated for me, so maybe check out her post and click on the links to the automatic generator things. It's pretty awesome.

Feel free to check mine out http://barbarafriedbergpersona…..nance.com/. I post a lot of investment stuff so it's really important to have a disclaimer. I'd love some feedback from anyone on whether you think the disclaimer is okay. It's on the sidebar. I stole some of my disclaimer from Sandy @Yesiamcheap

I just did a Google search for sample disclaimers and found plenty of sites that post disclaimers for others to copy.

Mine is pretty epic, actually.
Also, I found a site that asked a bunch of questions and helped generate the text, and then I added my $.02 at the end of each paragraph.
Epic Disclosure
Feel free to copy/paste as needed.

Alright, I just threw one together. Rather than write a long one and have it as a separate page, I just went for the sidebar disclaimer. I'd love to hear your guys' opinion on it!
