When you comment on an Akismet-enabled blog, you know when you're tossed in the spam because you do not see "Your comment is in moderation" nor do you see your post published. It would be better if it said you had been flagged as spam, but at least there's some feedback.

IntenseDebate, which is by the same guys who created Akismet, works a bit differently. Your comment appears as published and everything looks good… you even get a notification in your email asking you to confirm your subscription! But… when you reload the page later, your comment is gone, never to appear again!

I now have to double check that my comment was indeed published… and I'm not sure if blog owners can retrieve these comments or if they are deleted immediately.

Just something to watch out for for my fellow Akismet inmates!

I fell into Akismet jail when I started commenting a lot.  Ther ehas to be a threshold and then they hit you as spam.  Bastards.

I'm digging my way out of some serious debt at

Not that it is super relevant, but the people who created Akismet (Matt Mullenwag and the WP team at Automattic) purchased IntenseDebate, which was a Boulder, Colorado based startup.  So they have the same owner, but different creation stories.

I took IntenseDebate off of my Israel blog and I am glad I did, but I have left it on NarrowBridge.  But it is Akismet that kills your comments, not ID.  That is why I added conditional CAPTCHA (as suggested here) and things have been much better.

You would figure that after contacting Akismet your comments would no longer register as spam but that is not the case.
