Hi everyone,
I am new to guest posting. How do you know if someone's guest post is legitimate or just an ad in disguise? I got an email from someone today offering to guest post on my blog. here is the email:
Hi,
This is ****, I went through your site(aftercollegemoney.com)while surfing in Google, am very Much impressed with your site's unique information?s.
I work as a content writer in many financial (especially in student loan) communities and love the Opportunity to guest post for your readers. I would like to give you a Unique article on any student loan related topics. No duplication or copying of the article is done. I assure you that the article will be published only on your site.
The best part is I won?t be charging you a penny, but in return all I need is just one link within the article.
Looking forward for a positive reply.
Looking at the grammar and punctuation of this email, the person doesn't seem like a very good writer. Also, the last guest post on my site had some scathing comments written about it and I wonder if the post was one big spam trick (Here's the link: http://aftercollegemoney.com/t…..ave-money/) How do you bloggers know you are getting a quality guest post and not getting duped?

When you see, "The best part is I won't be charging you a penny" and "looking forward FOR a positive reply," it's spam. I can elaborate via email if you want, but trust me, it's spam.
Edited to add: The one you linked to above? Also spam. I would take out the link in the first paragraph.

My general rule is to only accept articles from bloggers/authors I already know. I get emails like the one above EVERY day.
There are legitimate offer out there but it's difficult to seed through them all.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I will have to be more careful in the future. I got the guest post email back within the first month of starting my blog. Because I was begging for content, I posted the guest post even though I thought it might be spam.

I received the same offer. Sounds like exact wording. Deleted.

Lol I think I have been receiving these the past few days from someone as well. I dont know if it is an actual person, because I replied and they put a somewhat thought ful response together but when I pressed more they all of a sudden stopped responding.
I cant believe the lengths that spammers go to now a days just to get their garbage out there.

Sometimes you get an offer for a guest post from someone who claims to be a blogger. Just check the links in the article. When the links are just to a commercial site and not to a blog, I never accept or publish the post.

… unless I can turn it into a sponsored post provided it is written informative enough.

Can you say "Nigeria"?
Honestly most of us get these carbon copies all the time, almost daily, they aren't legitmate advertisers, and most of them are scam sites. I delete these without even thinking about it. A real advertiser will usually tell you what site they are from.
Now if you get a post that actually is legit, and they are offering you a "free" guest post, then tell them there is a "spnsorhsip fee" for non-personal posts and charge moola!
Cheers!

I fell for this a couple of times in my early days. After I got wise to what was actually going on, I removed the links and did a search test to make sure there wasn't duplicate content out there, in which case the entire article would have come down.

That definitely looks spammy to me. I only allow guest posts on my blog from bloggers that I know (ie that I'm familiar with or converse with). Companies or ad agencies can guest post but they pay a fee, as it's sponsored.

Is there any harm in keeping the link or the article? I already posted it on my site and it has 2 comments on it. The comments were critical, but they were comments nonetheless. Should I keep the article?

I love how these guys "won't charge a penny" for a piece-o-trash blog post. They should pay you just to open their email.

Spam! Some of these are also so badly written that I won't consider asking them to write a shopping list.

Careful too for the ones that appear to want to link to a 'personal' blog. If you look more carefully at the personal blog you'll find that it is nothing more than a link farm for commercial sites.

If you want to keep the article now that it's been indexed, fine, but I would remove any links or at the very least make then 'nofollow'

Ok, I removed the link from the guest post, but I decided to leave the guest post. In the future, I will ignore emails like this cause they are capital S.P.A.M.
