I've Been Focusing on Speed & Sidebar

Hey everyone!  I've been really focusing on improving the load speed of my site, and was hoping for feedback from regular readers!

http://thecollegeinvestor.com/

I have WP-SuperCache and WP-Minify to cache and minify the CSS.  Any other suggestions to improve speed (short of using Amazon, I can't afford that currently)?

How does it feel?  Does it seem faster to anyone?

Also, I've been tinkering with the sidebar, to get it to load faster and have more relevent stuff.  Any feedback?

Your help is always appreciated!

Robert

It is loading much faster!  I used to have to look at the brown background for 3-5 seconds and now it just flashes through that part.  Nice!

Load time is great.  I'll have to install these as well.

The initial load time was a little bit faster, but I really noticed the difference when navagating to other parts of the site. I need to add WP-Minify to my site (alraedy using Super Cache and it's still really slow).

It is much faster for me. It loads almost instantaneously when I come back, so great job! The background still takes a few seconds to load though… is it a pic? it looks like just background color to me?

Much faster!  Laugh  Before I did wait a few seconds to get past the brown background.  Good job.  Might need to check out the plugins myself.  Smile

@Suba – No, its not a picture, just a color.  One thing I have heard will really improve my speed is using CSS sprites to improve the loading time.  I just don't know how to do that yet.

i just tried it and it's quite fast. but then again i have the FIOS. have you run it through those tools online that gauge your speed? i know alexa has some sort of speed meter, but don't know the mechanics of how it works

Love the look of your site. I wasn't a regular visitor before so I'm not sure how much faster it really is. It's definitely fast enough now, but I'm sure it could also be faster.

If you haven't yet, take a look at http://www.webpagetest.org

Don't take the big number too much to heart though, because that is until your page (including all external items) are completely loaded. The "start render" number is usually more important.

Thanks for the link!  It was very helpful.  I wish I had ran it before I started tinkering!

No problem! If you spend some time clicking on all the charts and going through all the tabs, there is a wealth of information there. Paying close attention to the colours on the bar charts can also really tell you exactly what is going on.

You can even make a comparison video between your site and others sites showing exactly when objects start rendering on the page and when each of them finishes loading to see how you stack up against others.

Try running it against my site and see how you compare.

Unfortunately, I find my site speed to be fairly erratic lately and I'm thinking of contact my webhost about it. It's usually pretty fast, but sometimes it slows right down to a crawl.
