Joining an Affiliate Network – How Much Traffic Do You Need?

I've started looking into affiliate networks, but I'm wondering if it's premature at this point. My Alexa ranking just dropped below 900K and traffic is still pretty light, so I doubt I'd be approved for many affiliate ads right now. Is there any point in applying to join an affiliate network now, or should I wait until my Alexa rank is lower and traffic gets higher and more consistent? Is there a certain number I should shoot for where I'll be more likely to be approved for affiliate ads?

Join an affiliate network like Commission Junction or FlexOffers.  Traffic and Alexa don't matter.

In fact, one of my best converting affiliate sites gets only about 70 unique visitors per day and has an Alexa rank of over 400,000.  It is just highly targeted traffic looking for the products I'm offering.

Thanks, those were the two I was looking at as I've seen them recommended in these forums. What should I expect as a newbie? Will I get rejected by most ads I apply for?

It seems like FO is a lot easier to get approved through.  At least that was my experience when I first applied.

I still get denied for some advertisers so who knows what criteria they use.

Good to know, Jeff!  I get denied for plenty, but accepted to a fair share of programs.

The FlexOffers team is great.  I don't know if they always do this, but I seem to be assigned to a manager/rep team, and they consistently apply for offers on my behalf and follow up with me periodically.  I like it because it keeps me on my toes and makes me feel like I can ask for help at any time.  You'll like them.

For a lot of programs, traffic doesn't matter that much to apply and promote. Also, you can reply to rejections and ask for approval in many cases.  If you're trying to learn the ins and outs, it's a great idea to sign-up early and get your feet wet with one or two affiliates.

Another great affiliate program anyone can join and that's often overlooked is Amazon.com.  You can refer people to specific books or videos, and best of all you make commissions off anything a person buys on Amazon within 24 hours (not just the product your referred).  You can get some killer "surprise" commissions because of this.

Traffic doesn't matter at all, it's all about how targeted the traffic you do have is. If you convert at 40%, for example. you can make good money on 10 visits per day. Flexoffers is probably the easiest way to get into most programs but I prefer dealing directly with sites like CJ. For the most part, you are a sub-affiliate on sites like Flexoffers which means a.) they usually take a slice for themselves, and b.) payment is a bit unpredictable.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I just created an account with Commission Junction and will try that out for a bit before expanding to other networks as well.
